Parts of windows do not refresh

Sometimes parts of screen do not refresh and instead are grey or black or filled with the wallpaper or the windows below or recently closed/minimized windows or content from other workspace. This happens especially when the app starts up or uses some more CPU.
I've had this problem or problems for a couple years, with many different apps: GTK, Qt, Java… it seems to be completely random. Some updates solve it for some programs and sometimes new ones become affected. It also doesn't seem to be related to drivers: the problem happened on my 2 previous setups with NVidia cards, both with Nouveau and proprietary drivers and it happens on a new machine with AMD. I've been using AwesomeWM for quite some time and I don't remember if it happened on other environments but probably yes. --no-argb and disabling composition manager doesn't help.
From time to time I would try googling for this but I could never figure it out. Perhaps the cause is my lack of care to maintain my system, as long as it's usable. I just don't use affected programs or I find replacements.

This is an example with the program that reminded me of the problem this time:

In the central area the result of the example code on the left should be rendered. Instead you can still see the splash screen. And after switching to other workspace and back:

Funny thing is that that small square in the upper left corner actually renders the content that should be there and it is also responsive, as opposed to the rest of the area. If I click and drag around I can see a small piece of the generated scene there.

Other programs that used to be affected include: Firefox, Musescore and IIRC Unity3D. The first two I've checked and they work fine now.

Re: Parts of windows do not refresh

I have had these kinds of problems with stacking windows manager like icewm. Now I use xfce with compositing and I do not see that anymore. There was some change in how windows manager handle the refreshing and probably awesome is still an "old" WM. Such problems are most likely due to modern applications that get much less tested on "old" WM.

Another possibility are buggy 3D libraries or drivers. You might test the radeon kernel modules instead of amdgpu (or the other way around). But I think this is less likely than the previous explanation.
