NVIDIA OPTIMUS
Xfce started. successfully However, it is running in very low resolution.
This laptop has an Intel HD Graphics 530 and NVIDIA GeForce 960M

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce running in low resolution on DELL INS 7559

Can you at least paste an xrandr output? And maybe your xorg log as well?

Sorry for the delay, I have something else to deal with.

The output of xrandr:

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 640 x 480, maximum 16384 x 16384
eDP-1-1 connected 640x480+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 194mm
   640x480 59.94*
   320x240 60.05
HDMI-1-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

And xorg log:
Xorg.0.log:

Re: [SOLVED] Xfce running in low resolution on DELL INS 7559

Are you sure your machine is Optimus? It doesn't seem that way to me. Apparently both output ports are wired to the nvidia card and X starts on it as well. Also what's in /etc/xorg.conf?

You may want to try undo everything you did "for Optimus" first, then we'll see if it's really a problem in the nvidia driver (hsync out of range).

Btw do you use a DM or `startx`? I wonder why your xorg log still go into /var/log...

I am using startx, because I have some problem with XDM, which I want to deal with later.

I have realized that I have only installed the required packages in the OPTIMUS page.

Also, I did not find xorg.conf in /etc/X11. There is nothing in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d either. Every time I create xorg.conf, it will disappear at reboot.

This does clarify you are running a hybrid graphics setup combining an intel and nvidia card aka Optimus.

Normally an optimus system has the intel card as primary and the nvidia card as secondary, but you have nvidia as primary and intel as secondary .

The optimus page in the wiki assumes you are using the normal setup.
It's instructions stay valid, but everywhere it syas intel you'd need to read nvidia and everywhere it uses nvidia you should read intel.
This will be very confusing , best option for now is to forget the optimus wiki page and instead pretend you only have the nvidia card.

disable (remove or comment) the xrandr commands in xinitrc.
Then reboot , tell us what happens and post xorg log .

Sorry, I have just reinstalled my system, starting everything from scratch. I just installed xfce4 and related driver.
The result is, X Server did not start up. The .xinitrc file only have "exec startxfce4"
Strangely, the log file goes into Xorg.8.log:

I have just removed everything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the xfce works just fine. And I can use XDM now.
Maybe this problem is solved.
