For a while, I've been able to open image links with image programs, rather than my browser, and conveniently view them that way. On 2/16/17, I upgraded my system (don't worry, that isn't my most recent update) and this feature disappeared. Now, both programs act as if I had given them no input at all. The closest thing to an error message is ristretto spitting out:

(ristretto:22410): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_signal_connect_data: assertion 'G_TYPE_CHECK_INSTANCE (instance)' failedSomething else that also happened during that update was gvfs suddenly stopped being installed on my system, even though it's an optional dependency for various things (so my use of yaourt -Qtd couldn't have done it), and pacman never asked me to uninstall it. I'll probably never know why it disappeared. It took me 2 months--until a few days ago--to finally figure out that gvfs was missing, and that THAT was why I couldn't do anything with network locations in Thunar and had no Trash and etc.
Now that that's sorted out, I was hoping maybe the absence of gvfs was also causing this image URL issue, but no. I still can't open image URLs with ristretto or viewnior. What could be causing this? It would be very helpful if anyone knows what backend in GTK actually handles the opening of an image file from an URL, because then I could Google for this regression with that backend, or even try downgrading it.

Hello, I have the same problem. It's been some months that I can't get it back to work.
I can't load image from ristretto gimp etc.
Any idea ?

Nope. I can't find any insight into this issue anywhere at all. At least not with Googling.

Downgrading ristretto from 0.8.2-1 to 0.8.1-1 solved the issue.

Oh, wow. That fixed it for me, too. I didn't think to try that because the functionality disappeared from viewnior, too, making me think it was some backend issue.

I tested it and it works with :
ristretto 0.8.2
Update your /etc/pacman.conf file and remove line « IgnorePkg = ristretto »
