[SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

For the past couple weeks, Xorg has been randomly crashing on me, apparently for no reason at all.
It's worth noticing that there are no information at all on Xorg's logs (either at ~/.local/share/xorg/* or /var/log/).
The only log that may be relevant are the ones from systemd, where they show that Xorg did a coredump.

Here is the log from the last time this happened (just a few minutes ago):

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

I googled around, and I think this here might be what you see:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99358

You can see similar stack traces as yours in this bug report here:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=99431

The thing is, I think this was supposed to have been fixed upstream in February, and I'd then think everything about that is in the X version in the Arch repos.

Weird, should I reopen/open a new bug in this case?

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

Rather not the *very* same bug then, but maybe related. The patch applies to xinput but was developed for a segfault in the intel driver, the modesetting driver may have additional "needs". If you've an intel IGP you could install (and select) xf86-video-intel and see whether the segfaults still occur.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

I'm currently using that intel driver, along with bumblebee and nvidia's prop drivers for when I want to play some games.
I think it's worth noticing that the nvidia gpu was turned off all in the times this issue occurred.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

You need to clarify that, because the segfault is in the modesetting driver.
Ie. you were *not* using the xf86-video-intel driver at this point.

I *was* using the xf86-video-intel, I haven't fiddled with my dedi gpu for almost a week now, that's why I'm saying it's a really weird thing to happen.
By the way, it crashed another couple times since my last post:

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

I *was* using the xf86-video-intel

0  0x00007f65b6da20e1 n/a (modesetting_drv.so)

I'd say, it's more like you think you are/were using it...
The segfault clearly happens in the modesetting driver, so either it occurs while the driver is considered and un/loaded right during the X11 startup process or, if X11 happens to be "randomly crashing on [you], apparently for no reason at all", because it's the driver in use.

Please provide an xorg log and you xorg conf (ie. /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/* contents)
If you're using gdm, the xorg log is redirected to the journal

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

Weird, I thought intel's driver was enabled by default instead of modesetting after installing the xf86-video-intel packaged. Guess it's my fault for not reading then.
Anyway, enabled it now, let's see how it fares.

Here's the latest log just in case:

Regarding the crash itself, should I mind talking to someone responsible for the modesetting driver it about this issue?

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

Lesson learned: Arch does rarely alter any config by merely installing a package. It's not ubuntu ;-)
If you do not encounter a similar crash (the same won't happen since you're not using the driver anymore), this points out that the modesetting driver needs further action in this context (what is important, intel is kinda being phased out) so yes: should be reported. You'll however be required to compile the modesetting driver yourself to get a better backtrace (arch strips all symbols by default and provides no debug libs)

Yes, lesson learned, and thanks for all the help provided smile
Gonna look into the modesetting crash latter whenever possible.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg crashing apparently out of nowhere

I'm also using bumblebee + Nvidia. FWIW I moved from Intel to modesetting several months ago. I didn't notice much change. However, in the last few weeks, I've been having similar crashes, in and out of bumblebee. Without bumblebee, I crash once every few days. In bumblebee, while gaming, I crash regularly within 20 minutes or so.

I just tried reverting to Intel, and so far bumblebee has been stable. I'll see how it goes in the longer term.

EDIT
It's ridiculously solid. I'm sticking with Intel for now.

EDIT 2
It's very solid under load in bumblebee, but I'm still getting crashes outside of bumblebee every few days. I'm going to test linux-lts now.

EDIT 3
linux-lts has been fine for the last two days, but I just tested the new linux 4.11.2-1. It crashed within 10 minutes or so.
