[SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

Hi! I recently bought a new laptop (MSI GE72 7RD Apache) and I followed the Arch Wiki to install Arch Linux as I've made for other laptops before.

However, after installation, when I run reboot, shutdown and other commands including lspci the system hangs, an after a while it prints recursively:

INFO: task lspci: 409 blocked for more than 120 seconds
          Not tainted 4.10.13-1-ARCH #1
"echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message

I'm pretty lost about the meaning of this and after some search in the Internet I still don't understand how to get this error. Does anybody have any idea? thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

Did a search engine query for the keywords "lspci system hang" not return any relevant results?

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

Actually it also hangs with reboot and shutdown (in such cases, in the first line of the error the name of the process is reboot or shutdown respectively, not lspci). So I don't think the problem is exclusive to lspci.

What I've done so far is a custom file under /etc/sysctl.d following  this post, but it does not help.

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

First search engine result for the keywords I listed
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=183185 ( even if the cause is not the same do check the journal as this post suggests )
First result not from bbs.archlinux.org
https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/45825

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

Thanks for the query. As far as I understand, in these threads they always solve the problem by creating a file in /etc/modprobe.d containing:

options snd-hda-intel enable=0,1,0

However, this does not seem to solve my problem. After reboot, the problem persists (of course also if i use reboot command).

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

My reading was both the thread and bug report issue I linked had a work around solution of blacklisting the nouveau driver.
However without knowing the cause such as by checking the journal after running lspci and waiting the message "blocked for more than 120 seconds." I would not blacklist the module.
I would also revert the other changes you have made so far as they have had no positive effect.

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

I tried the following. I started Arch Linux installation process again from a live USB, and I get the same error of I run any of those commands. Furthermore, if I try to obstall other distro such as Ubuntu. A similar error appears when trying it without installing.

In this last case, another error appear which says «Broken BIOS suspected». Which makes me wonder of I destroyed this laptop forever when I decided partitioning and formatting. Is thar possible? I never had such a problem before

Are you not able to do this?  As I understood it the system does not lockup completely after you run lspci.

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

The system hangs completely after I run lspci, rebot... so I cannot do anything but switch off the computer pressing the power button.

The output of journalctl -b is the following:

I see in the journal two errors concerning ACPI (AE_NOT_FOUND), but I've been said that this may not be important. Another one is related to "tmp_crb" and at least five more are about "nouveau", maybe I should start searching in there.

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

Well, I located another suspicious line related to the nouveau driver:

may 04 02:01:57 farone kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: hwmon_device_register() is deprecated. Please convert the driver to use hwmon_device_register_with_info().

However, I'm not confident about what I found about this "conversion" to use hwmon_device_register_with_info in the Internet. Is this meaningful for anybody?

I think I now better understand why Linus Torvalds said F**ku to NVIDIA.

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

no, but this line is:

may 04 02:01:57 farone kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: DRM: failed to create kernel channel, -22

=> blacklist nouveau

Also nvidia (the company) is hardly involved in that kernel module, you could install the nvidia kernel module to auto-blacklist nouveau ...

Linus doesn't like nvidia since they prefer to bend the world around their kernel module rather than align to general kernel development.
They do so, because the other approach would require open source, what means they cannot use various 3rd party code what results in the requirement to maintain fundamentally different kernel code across the supported OS ...

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

Wow, it works like a charm!! Thank very much you both for your time!! smile

It seems that there are different ways to blacklist a kernel module. If this may help anybody in the future, the one that solved my problem was to blacklist nouveau by modifying the kernel parameters in GRUB configuration file (/etc/default/grub), so the relevant line now looks like:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" <...parameters...> modprobe.blacklist=nouveau"

After that, create a new /boot/grub/grub.cfg file using grub-mkconfig and voilà, nouveau blacklisted. The arch wiki Arch Wiki blacklisting section at Kernel modules page and Arch Wiki Kernel parameters are highly relevant in this topic.

Re: [SOLVED] System hangs: "Process blocked for more than 120 seconds"

I confirm the same problem is occurring on MSI GP62M Leopard Pro on a new install. Blacklisting nouveau fixed the issue.
