eGPU + XPS13 via Akitio PCIe box

Hi all,

Do tell me if this post is in the wrong place - I'm looking to solicit community opinion on eGPU compatability. I have a Dell XPS13 running Arch, but I do some gaming and I've wanted to take the eGPU plunge for a while.

I want to try putting a GTX1050 into the Akitio PCIe expansion box with thunderbolt 3 (it's not designed for GPUs, but it's possible with the GTX1050) and using it with my XPS13. I'm really excited about the possibility, because I like the small form factor, but it's a lot of money and I'm having a hard time getting information on compatability.

What do you guys think? Might/will it work? Is this a fool's errand?

Additional info:
- I'm inspired by this guy who got this setup going on a macbook running windows https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RVxtkfw0vaE
- the akitio: https://www.akitio.com/expansion/thunder3-pcie-box

TIA

Re: eGPU + XPS13 via Akitio PCIe box

I think it would work, since it talks with PCIe protocol across the cable. I think it provides an external PCIe slot that works just like an internal one (and some other additional stuff).

However, tho it's a PCIe x16 slot, TB3 can provides only up to 4 PCIe 3.0 lanes. Not sure if that would be quite a bottleneck and how good the performance will be.

Re: eGPU + XPS13 via Akitio PCIe box

I ran a razer blade stealth with the razer core, had it working with minor problems. On the whole I was happy with the experience. For me, disconnecting the razer core while x was running never worked. Disconnecting after shutting down x worked sometimes.

I know of people who have gotten akitio working with xps13 as well. The main thing you need to do is change the security mode to 'Legacy' in bios. Once you do that though it should work no problem.
