[SOLVED] Dell XPS 15 9560 - Kernel 4.11 and 4.10.13 hangs after boot.

Kernel 4.11 and 4.10.13 prevent my system from booting.  4.10.10 and below works great.

I'm running:
Systemd boot
NVE harddrive
Xorg
GDM
Gnome 3.xx

When I run these kernels GDM does start.  For a few seconds the computer will take keyboard input.  I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 and get into a terminal, from there everything will work fine in that terminal.  If I don't change into a terminal, after a few seconds mouse clicks and all keyboard input is ignored.  The Mouse will continue to move just fine, the backlight on the keyboard acts correctly.

As another note, the computer wont power off without holding down the power button.

I don't even know where to start debugging.  As a temp "fix" I'm running linux-lts kernel, which runs fine.

Here is my boot config:
https://pastebin.com/4Rn5nkbh

Here is a a journalctl -b of a failed boot (Gdm debug is on):
https://pastebin.com/ykuzkpP8

Here is a journalctl -b of a successful boot:
https://pastebin.com/pb1TXhbX

Anyone else hit by this?  Any other information I can provide?  Thanks.

Hi, i have the exact same problems.
The only difference is that I'm using light dm and budgie desktop.

Really annoing. And haven't found the cause yet and the solution

Zjemm, can you please post a journalctl -b of a failed boot?  I'd like to compare your logs against my own.

Re: [SOLVED] Dell XPS 15 9560 - Kernel 4.11 and 4.10.13 hangs after boot.

I found this article:  http://news.softpedia.com/news/linux-ke … 4827.shtml  That mentions GPU updates, I'm going to investigate in that area and see if there something new that is breaking.

Digging through the change log:
https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … og-4.10.10

There are several mentions of i915 changes.  That'll be where I start.

now i'm running on:  4.10.10-1-ARCH

and still on some time on my working day the laptop froze on me...

seems like a bug in the 4.10 and up kernels sad but its not the same issue as with the freezing on 4.11 as described above in this topic

heres the log:

Re: [SOLVED] Dell XPS 15 9560 - Kernel 4.11 and 4.10.13 hangs after boot.

Orbital_sFear did you manage to solve the issue?
I cant find a thing.

Maybe this week I'm able to run the new kernel some more and do some tests and hope to find the answer.

We seem to be the only one with this issue

Re: [SOLVED] Dell XPS 15 9560 - Kernel 4.11 and 4.10.13 hangs after boot.

Hey Zjemm,

I haven't found a solution either.  It does seem like we are the only two having this issue.  You have a really nice trace posted there.

I do agree the issue is purely that kernel version, and my guess is its the i915 driver at the core of our issue.

Some interesting things I've noticed:

When I run the newer kernel, I get this line:
kernel: i915: unknown parameter 'preliminary_hw_support' ignored

Also, there is a new version of the i915 driver between these kernels:
intel(0): Using Kernel Mode Setting driver: i915, version 1.6.0 20160919
vs.
intel(0): Using Kernel Mode Setting driver: i915, version 1.6.0 20170123

I also found my computer is getting this error buried deep in the logs:
kernel: smpboot: CPU0: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz (family: 0x6, model: 0x9e, stepping: 0x9)
kernel: mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 6: ee2000000040110a

kernel: mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:906e9 TIME 1495751826 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode 48

Looks pretty ugly, there might be a problem with my chip that is getting exposed with this newer driver?

I'm still running the linux-lts kernel to keep my machine up.  I'll poke around at i915 kernel boot options and see if I can find anything.

It looks like we aren't totally alone.  This guy is seeing usb issues with 4.11, (so am I):

Here is a list of changes that have been made in i915:

Re: [SOLVED] Dell XPS 15 9560 - Kernel 4.11 and 4.10.13 hangs after boot.

those hardware error's (MCE) i think have all the new XPS laptops in combination with linux. i saw more people noticing it.
also get these errors on live cd's with other distro's

not sure what they mean and what impact they have.

what i noticed from my last try, is that the kernel is saying:

Jun 14 16:06:51 WORKPC kernel: nouveau 0000:01:00.0: DRM: evicting buffers...
Jun 14 16:06:51 WORKPC wpa_supplicant[531]: wlp2s0: CTRL-EVENT-REGDOM-CHANGE init=BEACON_HINT type=UNKNOWN

-- Reboot --

just before the freeze, but i don't have nouveau installed, and also not use the nvidia card
nothing else in the log that is giving me a clou.

i see you have the same nouveau messages in your boot log

do you use any i915 kernel boot options? i'm not
on the arch forum about the xps 9560 people are using i915 boot options for powersaving i think, never tried it

ill look at what you found, thanks for coming back on this issue

Re: [SOLVED] Dell XPS 15 9560 - Kernel 4.11 and 4.10.13 hangs after boot.

i disabled powertop, as that seemed to have issue's (nouveau messages in the bootlog) also installed 4.11-5 but still no difference

Solved:

i blacklisted nouveau, and until now i don't have had any freezes

What a find!  I'll check this out tonight.  I was still diving into the i915 path.  I tried several different boot options but nothing has had an effect.

Confirmed blacklist'ing nouveau fixed my rig as well.  Nice find!  I'm making this as solved.
