Dell XPS freezes on boot?

When starting up my Dell XPS running ArchLinux. There is a variety of possible outcomes that occurs after pressing the power button. It either:

a) Turns on completely normally, and works fine.
b) Turns on completely normally, and works fine but freezes at some point while using it.
c) The keyboard lights up, but nothing else happens. When hitting the laptop lightly, I get the "zzzz" sound (I don't know what sound that is, but that's the sound it makes when it works normally) but nothing else happens.

I don't know why this happens. Sometimes the laptop also freezes at the dell splashscreen, and I tried testing taking out the power plug. The screen brightness changes even when it seems "frozen" by taking out / putting in the power plug. What is going on?
