Sounds like you were using an outdated version of the installer... The current one has you edit stuff before installing the kernel. Also, kernel24 no longer exists as of right now... Other than that nothing looks particularly unusual. As I said, try downloading the pacman package manually and installing it with 'pacman -U'.

Could it be an old version of the iso? In the early days (around 0.6 Widget) the mirrors were listed in /etc/pacman.conf, and there was no /etc/pacman.d/ directory.

yeah looks like i will have to download a new iso and try that,not so sure about being up to date with linuxiso.org i have gotten a few out of date iso's from them in the past year,but oh well......lol
