[SOLVED...?]Awesome WM 100% core usage

My laptop has been loudly spinning it's fan recently. I ran

htop

to see what the problem was and it turns out awesome wm is causing the issue.

It runs a single core at a constant 98-100%. It did not always do this.

I don't know exactly why this is happening. This thread claims it is xcompmgr's fault.
I am using compton which uses xcompmgr.

I stopped compton with no change. I then disabled compton and reboot. Still no change.
I don't really know what is causing this to happen, any help would be appreciated.

Does it happen if you run it with a vanilla config?

Re: [SOLVED...?]Awesome WM 100% core usage

Okay I replaced the current rc.lua with the rc.lua.old that I had saved before the last update and it stopped bugging out.
I then upgraded awesome

pacman -S awesome

and according to pacman nothing should have changed. The issue did not reoccur.
What's crazy is that I then I switched the rc.lua files back and the issue did not continue. So I am currently running the same rc.lua that I was when I posted (I checked my added code to be sure) and the issue no longer occurs.
No other changes were made to the system.
No idea what happened to make it stop just by switching around the rc.lua file. This issue has been going on for days through reboots and messing around with compton.
Not really sure if this issue can be marked [Solved]...

Re: [SOLVED...?]Awesome WM 100% core usage

On further investigation my rc.lua is the same, however the theme file I was using seems to have been overwritten with the update.
I believed nothing had changed because no new files were downloaded, but old files were overwritten.
It looks like a modification I made to the theme may have caused this. Though I don't know why it started acting up only recently.

[EDIT]
I just put back in the changes I made to the theme, the issue still does not occur.
I am at a loss as to why this happened in the first place.
