[SOLVED] sddm/plasma black screen after last update

My plasma desktop is not starting after the last update that upgraded Qt to 5.9.
It's giving a black screen and a little graphical message at the top left screen corner saying:

Could not sync environment to dbus.

This message has an 'okay' button but pressing it leads to nothing.

The mouse cursor is showing and moving on the black screen. I can get a terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F2 and I can login using it.

Using sddm, plasma and nvidia proprietary driver.
It was working fine before this update. AUR packages are also up-to-date.

My ~/.xinitrc is the default copied from /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc .

Not sure if it's related to this problem and if it will help here, but I'm also having an issue with the lxqt desktop on another Arch machine (nvidia-340xx) after the last update to Qt 5.9. On that machine the desktop starts and gives a black background, no desktop icons, pcmanfm-qt does not work, volume control tray icon does not work and blueman icon does not show on tray. Maybe open a new topic for it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [SOLVED] sddm/plasma black screen after last update

I have autologin enabled in sddm on the plasma machine.

If I disable autologin I can see the sddm graphical login screen, but plasma does not start after entering username and password. The same message 'Could not sync environment to dbus' still appears and system hangs, although having a movable mouse pointer. Installing pam_mount does not solve the issue.

On the lxqt machine I don't have autologin enabled and I can do the graphical login and use the desktop. But the desktop has many issues as already described.

Re: [SOLVED] sddm/plasma black screen after last update

Solved it.
Somehow, the ~/.config folder got messed by the last update on both machines. On the plasma machine it was even with wrong permissions. I wonder what package update caused it, or whatever it was...

I could fix it with:
$ rm -rf ~/.config

I had to delete it entirely. Unfortunately I loosed all my settings, but everything seems to be working fine now on both machines.

Re: [SOLVED] sddm/plasma black screen after last update

Thanks for the hint to the ~/.config folder

I was hit by this bug too, and for the record I could narrow it down to the ~/.config/systemd folder

Removing the ~/.config/systemd folder allowed me to login again without losing the rest of my config :-)

It was a pleasure to share the answer.

Good to know that I was not alone with this bug smile
I was felling that no one had it since there were no answer and no more threads about something similar. And it looked so common because it happened suddenly after a 'pacman -Syu'.

I really would like to know what caused it.

Great news, thanks for sharing. If it happen again we now have a more precise folder to look at.

Also for the record, this bug was not specific for sddm or plasma, but happened on other DM and DE that I tried. They failed to start too with similar messages. It helped me to track it.
