Hello,
Every time I want to print something, I need to do the following steps (which I figured out after reading all of the wiki etc):
1. as root, do systemctl restart org.cups.cupsd.service
2. as non-root, do hp-systray
3. sometimes, in hp-systray UI, do "start printer"
4. try to print and hope it works. sometimes it doesn't. TODAY IS ONE OF THOSE DAYS IT DOESN'T. archlinux updates change things?
I don't want a different adventure after every pacman -Syu. I would instead like it to be the following steps:
1. print from any application and select the printer
2. it works (even after many pacman -Syu's and so on)
Is there a good way to get such reliable stable printing? How can I configure it properly? Thanks!

Have you enabled the org.cups.cupsd.service so that it automatically starts at boot?
In my experience HP printers are bulletproof with Linux, I've never had an issue with any of mine.

Is the org.cups.cupsd.service enough?
Somehow the printer would only appear in UI print dialogs after also starting hp-systray. Is there a way to not need hp-systray?

I have a brother printer that just works with cups... it's old those likely no longer available. Best advice is to consult google to see which works and buy that one.

Avoid hplip and use https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/foo2zjs-nightly/ if you can (and suffer from the binary plugin requirement)

I'm curious - which printer do you have? Have you enabled org.cups.cupsd.service? If you are trying to print from gtk3 applications, do you have gtk3-print-backends installed? Do you use the binary plugin?
