Hi,
I'm trying to configure this old printer on my Arch machine but CUPS doesn't even recognise it.
lsusb
gives:
Bus 004 Device 011: ID 04dd:9096 Sharp Corp.
and
lpinfo -v
gives:
network ipp
network beh
network https
network socket
network lpd
direct hp
direct gmd
network ipps
network http
network smb
direct hpfax
OpenPrinting says it mostly works.
Is it at all possible to make this printer work with Linux?

I can find files with interesting names in two packages:
$ pacman -Fl | perl -ne 'print if /sharp/i and /m165/i'
foomatic-db usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/Sharp-AR-M165.xml
foomatic-db usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/Sharp-AR-M165_PS.xml
foomatic-db-ppds usr/share/foomatic/db/source/PPD/Sharp/sharm165.ppd.gz
(you need to run "sudo pacman -Fy" before this "pacman -Fl" command works)

foomatic-db was installed. I tried installing foomatic-db-ppds but the problem remains - printer is not detected.

Do you have foomatic-db-engine installed as well? Have you seen the relevant section of the wiki? What is the output of dmesg when plugging in the printer?

I do have foomatic-db-engine installed. I did read the troubleshooting section of the wiki. The output of dmesg when I plug in the printer is:
usb 1-1.3: new full-speed USB device number 4 using ehci-pci
I tried adding a udev rule and a new printer "Unknown" appeared in the list. I tried adding it and there is communication between the printer and the PC but it gets stuck at "processing data" with the data led flashing. I'll try other drivers and report back.
I tried using all the drivers for this printer (foomatic/pxlmono, foomatic/PS, PS1.1) and in all cases the printer gets stuck in "processing data".
Tried connecting to a Windows 10 machine and it prints, so it's not a problem with the printer or cable.
