Replacing KWin by i3

I'm trying to replace the kwin wm from kde by the i3 tiling wm. So I have a config of i3 up and running alone and I wanted to use that config. For that, I added the following script like the wiki said https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KD … ow_manager:

~/.config/plasma-workspace/env/set_window_manager.sh

export KDEWM=/usr/bin/i3

Then I installed i3-kde from the aur, although I don't know exactly what it does. And finnaly, I added these lines in my i3 config file:

## Plasma Integration
# Try to kill the wallpaper set by Plasma (it takes up the entire workspace and hides everythiing)
exec --no-startup-id wmctrl -c Plasma
for_window [title="Desktop — Plasma"] kill; floating enable; border none

## Avoid tiling popups, dropdown windows from plasma
# for the first time, manually resize them, i3 will remember the setting for floating windows
for_window [class="plasmashell"] floating enable;
for_window [class="Plasma"] floating enable; border none
for_window [title="plasma-desktop"] floating enable; border none
for_window [title="win7"] floating enable; border none
for_window [class="krunner"] floating enable; border none
for_window [class="Kmix"] floating enable; border none
for_window [class="Klipper"] floating enable; border none
for_window [class="Plasmoidviewer"] floating enable; border none

Now the thing is, when I log in, the i3 is loaded and starts running perfectly, and the plasma desktop starts running but only for a few seconds, leaving i3 running alone. Anyone knows what is happening and how can I fix it?

EDIT: I realized i3-kde was not up to date, and had some issues building the package so I switched back to i3wm. Now I got kde running now, but the panel's aren't showing.

Re: Replacing KWin by i3

I am also thinking about replacing kwin by i3.
Do you still use it?
Does it work perfectly?
Have you further improved your config?

Re: Replacing KWin by i3

I started using i3 with kde this week and its working well.  I have used the same config as the OP.  I've still to do some tweaking of my shortcuts before I'm completely happy with the setup ... but so far ... its feeling good.

Forgot to give credit to my source for the i3 tweaks! ... Github: avivace/dotfiles
