I have a weird problem: I use openbox with no desktop manager. In ~/.xinitrc I start a urxvt terminal among other things. If I run pulseaudio from that terminal and from the openbox menu I open another urxvt terminal and run lets say pavucontrol, it won't connect to pulseaudio. BUT, if I open two terminals from the openbox menu and run pulseaudio in one and pavucontrol in the other, then pavucontol will connect successfully. Why does this happen?
.xinitrc:
...
urxvt &
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session openbox-session
.config/openbox/autostart.sh:
/usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 &
pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog &
...
Thanks!

There is no need to start pulseaudio manually in arch. It is socket activated. Please read wiki page on pulseaudio.
Arch is home!

exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session openbox-sessionGet rid of "ck-launch-session dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session", you're breaking logind and thus the session activity.
The "..." are hopefully the system provided includes, see the second note on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc
