urxvt graphical glitches on restart in Wayland on Gnome 3

I'm trying to configure urxvt to my liking, but I'm having an issue with the font (and other settings) glitching when I restart my computer. If I open up a new urxvt window after restarting my computer, the fonts and the terminal window are squished ever so slightly, and some letters only half load. Here's a screenshot:

Now, I've been able to fix this issue by using xrdb to load my .Xdefaults file:

xrdb -load ~/.Xdefaults

Obviously it doesn't fix the terminal window, but opening a new one has the proper settings. Oddly enough this fix stays even if I immediately use xrdb to remove the .Xresources file:

xrdb -remove ~/.Xdefaults

which is what is strange to me. It feels kind of like the old solution of turning it off and back on again, despite not actually doing so.

I'm using .Xdefaults instead of the recommended .Xresources because Wayland doesn't source .Xresources on startup, but according to this post, urxvt sources .Xdefaults on startup.

Before using .Xdefaults, I wrote a systemd user service that, upon login, would

xrdb -load ~/.Xresources

, and this oddly had the same issue. I abandoned the systemd solution when using .Xdefaults had the same outcome with much less effort.
