SDDM login disables keyboard?

I've got SDDM installed and after an upgrade it's behaving oddly.

* If I `systemctl set-default multi-user`, log in from the CLI, and then `startx`, my WM works just fine.
* If I `systemctl set-default graphical`, I can use the keyboard to log in, but as soon as the WM starts the keyboard is disabled.  I've got both plasma and awesome installed; same behavior on either session (with a default rc.lua)

So I conclude it's not X11 misconfigured, it's not udev, and it's not autostart.  Any clues to resolving this discrepancy?  I'm a bit stumped troubleshooting this because the keyboard doesn't work at all when the misbehavior manifests.

Thanks for any help.
