Laptops which run Arch

I realize that Linux on Laptops and TuxMobil.org list laptops that run linux. But I am wondering what laptops the Arch community is using. So what laptops, make and model, do you have which are running Arch.

My curiosity stems from the fact that I am getting a laptop once I pass my PhD qualifying exams in mathematics. So I am looking to buy.

Toshiba Satellite M55-S3512

Arch just installed and ran, no problem. WiFI works, mousepad works, DVD works (Xine). All the things I feared might not, worked. I love being able to close the lid and suspend it 'till I get up in the morning or get back from work in the evening. (KDE makes setup of suspend a breeze, of course.)

Can't beat a 4-second "boot" time

My previous laptop was an Averatec 3150. Got everything working just fine. It came with no WiFI, so I had to use a Belkin PCMCIA card and a wrapper. It died after about two-three years of continuous use. (Could just need a new processor. HDD worked in another laptop.)

Naturally, both lapttops were immediately wiped (WinXP Home, I think), upon purchase, and Arch installed. ;-)

(So I'm OS religeous. So sue me. )

I currently have an HP zd7140 which has worked great for the past 2.5 years or so. Everything works flawlessly except for the media card reader, but that's common. Also note that the wifi card is broadcom, which is *now* supported but required ndiswrapper for a long time.

I just ordered a Thinkpad T60 which has great linux support (see the "Thinkpad Ahoy!" thread in Arch Discussion, which I started to add my experiences to when the laptop arrives).

Acer aspire 3002 LMI.
needs ndiswrapper for the wireless and acerhk for the xtra keys, other than that no problems.

Note : Bios was at latest version before i installed arch

A pretty unknown chinese made laptop.
Everything works, excluding the Motorola SM56 winmodem, and the Texas Instaruments 4:1 card reader.

Dell Inspiron 9300

Everything has worked mostly out of the box. The card reader works if I enable the mmc_* modules, although I think it may be unstable as I got some file corruption earlier today... I haven't tried suspend.

Fujtisu P7010D; everything important works great. Running 855resolution to patch the VBIOS is about the only "unusual" it needs. The thing DOES have a fingerprint reader, but that isn't supported under linux. Fast, portable, and functional, FTW!

I'm running Arch on a Dell Latitude CPiA (PII based)

It performs suprisingly well for how old the computer is, even under KDE.

Acer Travelmate 4001WMLi (or WMi.. or similar). Everything works. (I made sure that Linux in general works well on it before buying ).
Oh, not sure about the ACPI suspend stuff though... I never tried it and don't need it. But I think I've read that it also works.

But it works extremely well with linux! Just the assembly is crap and it gets hot like hell (Desktop P43.06GHz HT).

IBM Thinkpad T40p - most everything worked out of the box - wireless, graphics, sleep, etc. Most of the "special" keys (Fn-F4 to sleep, etc) work fine.

Toshiba Satellite Pro M40X-169. Basically everything works.

I guess it would be better to compare hardware in the notebooks not the actual models. I mean mine is based for example on Intel 915GM chipset and 1.73 GHz Pentium M (Centrino). The network cards are realtek 8139 and ipw2200. The LCD has 1280x800 resolution and I'm also using external LCD 1440x900 in xinerama mode. No extra graphics card. Everything works with intel drivers from the kernel and xorg. The touchpad works very well using synaptics driver. BIOS is Phoenix (other notebooks have Toshiba BIOS) so I can't use extra toshiba linux tools but most things just work with standard tools.

From my experience: if you want extra 3D acceleration try to find a laptop with nvidia card. ATI generally works too but is more troublesome.

I had to diasable the "ACPI Processor" module, but everything is running fine (except for the Memory Stick Reader).

HP nx7000 and Toshiba M70 here... Both run Arch without any problems, working wireless (with ipw), bluetooth, etc. I haven't tried suspending or hibernating and i think speedstep doesn't work as it's supposed to because the laptops get hotter and the fan is working more than in windows.

Thinkpad X60s

Not all works fine for me yet eg. ACPI, Speedstepping, I don't know why.

Suspend works not, after wake up the Display not wake up...

I think it's my configuartion, but I don't know

Wifi & Ethernet works, the grapiccard only with vesa, the i810 driver in current is to old, must have version 1.5 or higher.

Toshiba M45

Doesn't seem to work with the Toshiba ACPI driver. Sound, video (Intel 915GM), wifi (ipw2200), and ethernet (marvell yukon) all work fine.

NEC Versa P550. I aquired it through the laptop program we have at my university.

Suspend works nicely, also the DVD drive. The fingerprint reader has no linux support (although it works fine from the bios fingerprint verifier).
Wifi works fine using ipw2200. I can also succesfully have wireless connection at my uni wireless network (which has a radius server and some weird encryption). Took a while to figure out though.

Aside from the fingerprint reader (which however does get detected correctly ) the only thing that is bugging is the acpi battery meter. Sometimes it doesn't detect a battery until you plug in/out the adapter. A faulty ACPI I guess. I tried fixing the ACPI bugs and using a custom DSDT, but it didn't help so far.

Actually it's pretty painless,
- no proprietary drivers needed
- WiFi is IPW2200
- full touchpad support in the kernel
- realtek ethernet
but there might be small issues:
- BZFLAG shows weird graphics
- the Intel915 chipset needs a bit help to get the 1400x1050 resolution: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … =1&ID=4489
- despite the specs, mine came with an SATA drive instead of IDE, so installing the boot loader and setting the correct pathes in /etc/fstab was a bit confusing (the installer reported and used /dev/hdc but the fstab needs /dev/sda to boot)
- never tried the modem

but all together i'm more than happy with it
