Toshiba Satellite A135-S4727, with madwifi, 915resolution, and standard Linux ACPI Sleep/Hibernate. Everything works with a little tweaking and paying attention to kernel messages.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Lenovo T42 works great.
speedstep, wireless w/ IPW2200, I got the the F4 & F12 keys to suspend and hibernate respectively, and added an event to /etc/acpi/events that suspends the machine on lid close. Sound works out of the box, and the hsf modem driver is available in AUR. Actually there is a wiki on Dell Inspiron 6400 that explains how to get the hsfmodem working from a .deb package using the ABS. This is an excellent all around Arch laptop tutorial.

It takes a little work and a little googleing, but I figured it all out in just a couple of days from switching from an outdated Debian. (The new Samba packages are not available yet, and networking with Windows clients sucks with Etch).

I love the rolling release cycle. I just image my machine over a network b4 doing a pacman -Syu in case I get hosed. So far so good.

I'll probably write a how to if there is any interest in it. But I think figuring it all out "The Arch Way" is more rewarding.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Hi !
I successfully installed arch on my Dell Inspiron 1501 :
wifi works with ndiwrapper and windows drivers.
graphics works on xf86-video-ati drivers
failed to set up using fglrx, so no hardware acceleration
fn-keys not working ( only fn+f2 for wifi works ) brightness, volume etc. not working
acpi : partly working
audio : working with intel hd module
sd/mmc card reader : working with sd cards, not working with mmc
---
hope this will help
PS. this is a turion x2 tl-52 with 1024 mb ram :
boots kernel in 7 seconds, total boot process : 65 seconds.
Strange, root partition i xfs ...
I managed to get slower systems ( p3 ) boot in 35 seconds ...
Is there any hint to setup the boot process so both processors work simultaneously so a task that need time, like checking fs, doesnt interrupt the whole boot up process ?

Re: Laptops which run Arch

xf86-video-ati should have support for hardware 3D. You need the libgl-dri and mesa packages, I think, and you need to config the X.

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … TI_Drivers

Radeons from 9500 to X850 have full 2D acceleration, they provide 3D acceleration as well but it doesn't support all the features that the proprietary drivers do.

Nop sad
I have an Ati Express 1150, based on 200M
No 3d with opensource drivers, tried enable dri in xorg.conf, but nothing worked
Somehow, after installing fglrx, the uninstalling it, X is screwed up, und doesn't boot properly ( kdm as deamon, doesnt startup properly, back to console, and as root /etc/rc.d/kdm restart the goes okay, but this is not the proper topic wink

Added 512mb more of ram for $20. Laptop works well, plenty fast (xfce and openbox). Have not tried the modem - really don't need it. Xfce+Beryl is very usable and looks good on the Intel GMA 950! Volume control and other multimedia keys working with xbindkeys.

I could not get wireless (Atheros AR5BXB63) working, so I bought an Intel Wireless 3945 Mini Pci-E adapter off of ebay for $15 - replaced the Atheros card and things work well. Wireless works!

Great laptop for college - $395 + Arch!

another acer aspire 3680 (2633) working with arch, i haven't tried beryl yet but composite works great on xfce, i got my wireless (atheros ar5700eg) working using ndiswrapper and the windows driver

good to hear that xbindkeys works, i should try that

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I got my ThinkPad R61 yesterday and had Arch up and running well in about 3-4 hours.  So far no major snags, although a few things don't work that I wish would.  Specifically..

Could you be a little more specific about what you did to get the system to suspend when you close the lid?  This is the biggest problem I'm having and I'd love to have it fixed smile

Re: Laptops which run Arch

ColdPie:

Yes create a file named lid: ie /etc/acpi/events/lid. Add the following then save it:

event=button/lid LID 00000080
action=pm-suspend

You must have the pm-utils installed.

also, I edited the sudoers file like so: (where user name is your user name)

username    ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate
username    ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/pm-suspend

restart.

The lid should now suspend when closed

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I tried on my Acer 5100-5674. Got everything working including wireless adapter ( bcm43xx + gnome-network-manger+bcm43xx-fwcutter ). It is however, rather unstable for some reason: at times the boot process seems to take longer, its quite noticeable ( sometimes boot process is a couple of seconds and sometimes up to 3 minutes ). Also at times gnome would randomly become unstable, applications failing to open, x refusing to close on shutdown, etc. However I have noticed some of these issues on my desktop as well, it only seems multiplied a bit on the notebook. Except for the boot process I think it might be only a Gnome thing.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I just got a T61p, haven't tried anything special yet, like suspend, speedstep etc...
Not all buttons are working yet, i'm sure they will when I get time to configure everything.

There's one problem im struggling with, and that's the two usb ports on the right side

irq 23: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpoll" option)
[<c0158274>] __report_bad_irq+0x24/0x80
[<c015855b>] note_interrupt+0x28b/0x2d0

[<c010717b>] do_IRQ+0x3b/0x70
[<c0104ee7>] common_interrupt+0x23/0x28
[<f8ac10b0>] acpi_processor_idle+0x29c/0x434 [processor]
[<c0102453>] cpu_idle+0x73/0xe0
=======================
handlers:
[<f89a2590>] (usb_hcd_irq+0x0/0x60 [usbcore])
Disabling IRQ #23

Except this, everything is working very well, if anyone of you have knowledge about the error above, gimme a note:)

If yes, did you try to boot with the "irqpoll" option?

Just my two cents.

Thinkpad T23.
All hardware works, including accelerated video and direct rendering 3d acceleration with savage driver. Thinkpad button, volume, contrast, buttons, etc all work with KDE KMilo plugin. D-Link AirPlus X-treme DWL-G650 PCI card, madwifi driver, Wlassistant work well.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have a Inspiron 1420, and it works great. I have not tried the modem, but I know there is a deb for Ubuntu for it so I would think that the source is also out there. Everything else works great, I have uvc installed for the webcam, and I am using the Intel xorg drivers from testing. I also had to install the wireless drivers for my intel wireless card but that is well documented on the wiki page for wireless. Over all it works great.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have Arch Linux running flawlessly on a Thinkpad X40.  A couple of things:

To get pm-suspend working, I have to boot with acpi_sleep=s3_bios, I added, VBERestore "true" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and DISPLAY_QUIRK_S3_BIOS="true" to /etc/pm/config.d/config.

I am running Openbox with urxvt, opera, openoffice, exaile, xfe.

With X running and all power-saving tricks turned on, PowerTOP idles me at 8.3 kW.

Can you tell me if you need all those three options, to suspend successfully? I mean, I had to use some pm-utils hacks too, it still flickers, but at least it brings up the video now.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I added them in this order:
1) acpi_sleep=s3_bios
2) DISPLAY_QUIRK_S3_BIOS
3) vberestore=true

After that, it worked.  It is possible that one step could be removed.

UPDATE: with kernel 2.6.24-rc2-git2 with all powertop patches, hpet, cfq, etc. I now idle at 7.8W.  This shatters my old record.  I can stay in C4 99.9% of the time with only X, urxvt, openbox, pypanel, and powertop running.
