Re: Laptops which run Arch

Acer Extensa 5620. Had a bit of trouble with sound, but I solved with the model=acer parameter. Also, I'm using ipw3945 for wireless.
This NB + Arch = fantastic.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

MacBook. I don't recommend anyone to run Linux on these things. The touchpad doesn't work very well (perhaps it is possible to fix, I don't know, but it's awful to use).

Sound is crackled. Xrandr doesn't work very well (even if you disable 3D). Dual monitor is very hard to set up. Never got suspend to work. Wireless (Atheros) keeps disconnecting. Etc...

The only reason I ran Linux on it is because it's "broken", it makes a high pitched "whine" and this makes it hard to concentrate while using it. In Linux you can do something like echo 2 > /sys/something/max_cstate and it's quiet.

Running: Arch Linux i686, x86_64, ppc

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm using Asus F3JC. ALSA become really broken for me now roll... Nearly to point of no usability. Since the day I'm using this laptop snd-hda-intel module seems to be quirky... But so far huge improvement over last year. Everything else works almost out of the box. I never tested 56k modem, FireWire and TV in/out (or what's that connector there).

Samsung R65 working flawlessly - well, almost. Haven't tested PCMCIA yet and the Modem doesn't work. But hey, who needs that crappy winmodems anyways? tongue

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Dell Inspiron E1705 with ATI X1300 graphics and Intel 3945 wifi.

Arch so far has worked well on this machine.  Had some ALSA/sound issues at first (the alsactl sliders didn't do as they were labeled; volume control increased the treble, etc., and it sounded weird) but that got fixed in the next update.  Done many pacman -Syu's and it has all just worked afterward.  I don't have to cross fingers and toes, throw salt over my shoulder, and pray like I used to have to with Gentoo "upgrades".

I dual-boot with XP, and the comical part is that when I buy some no-name device from Fry's and I can't get it to work in Windows, I boot into Arch, it autodetects the device and tells me what the innards have tattooed on them.  Then I go back to XP and Google for the appropriate Windows driver.  I've had to do that twice now to get things to work in Windows.

Now why does Bill think I want to pony up again for Vista?

Re: Laptops which run Arch

ThinkPad 390X and X23 here
I've messed around with only X23 lately and 390X is just keeping still at the moment, but pm-utils work "just fine" with X23. Pm-suspend needs all snd modules to be unloaded and after waking up you need to restore alsa levels. A little script:
sudo pm-suspend && alsactl restore
does it for me. Pm-hibernate works as it is. I have still a lot of things to try (and learn as I try them).
Never have encountered one problem with neither of them! (..that's with the basic, boot up, do your stuff and then shut down smile )

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Installed Arch on a HP Compaq 6720s just fine. Everything I've tried so far is working, except scanning for hidden wireless networks with iwlwifi which is failing. Connecting manually works though.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

My both laptops below works great with Arch. wink
Things like wireless, wired connection, WebCam, HP buttons, bluetooth, memory cards reader, Compiz Fusion, HP usb printer powered by Cups etc. are fully operational, however some things have just changed.
For me there is only no support for my HP scanner build-in into my printer.

Well, hidden APs often don't work on Linux. Plus, it's a 'feature' that makes the general public warm and fuzzy ('oooh! I can't see my ESSID! So stealth! So secure!') but it is useless for keeping out hackers (except for the occasional noob that is).

If you're in charge of the AP (and the network), I'd say: just turn it off, saves you some problems.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Thinkpad T60 core duo

Arch. was Gentoo in the past

All works except video out (does not work automagically and did not bother to make it work. Its i945 so i think it will not be problem) and modem (did not bother at all) and maybe pcmcia (have no cards to test it but i think it works)

Thinkpad 765D i586

Windows 98 that boots into CLI only (HDD 95 % bad blocks)

I wish i could run Arch on this but maybe i will install Gentoo (after replacing HDD)

Gigabyte W566U, everything works like a charm: wireless, web cam, video board. I didn't test bluetooth, even though I have some wiimotes to test. I still didn't have the time...

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm waiting my brand new EEE 901 to arrive to Finland (now it's sitting in some UPS storage facility in VESTEL, and waiting for some paper stuff). So I'll guess it'll go to next week which is sad, because i would have needed the machine this weekend.

BTW does anyone know about these UPS tracking status things? Mine says "THE COMMERCIAL INVOICE IS MISSING AND IS REQUIRED FOR EXPORT"
