Arch installed fine with default partition map (MBR) but I had a lot of problems using GPT and EFI booting. There's a simple solution for this but I didn't find it documented anywhere and it flatly contradicts the specification-based advice in the wiki and elsewhere. The fix is to format the EFI partition as fat 16 rather than fat 32. The latter just doesn't work with this machine. I couldn't get legacy booting to work with a GPT partition at all.

Most things then worked out of the box. 'OK' means worked with no configuration or worked following steps outlined in wiki, mostly as explained in or linked from the beginners' guide.
ethernet             OK
wifi                      install rfkill to remove soft block. Main issue is that it will not associate with the nearest AP for the relevant network but insists on associating with the more distant "master" AP. This is probably a wicd issue although I don't see it on other machines using wicd on the same network so it could be Arch- or Arch-configured-by-me- or hardware- specific.
bluetooth           install rfkill to remove soft block; puzzled over removing hard block; mysteriously fixed itself (but I don't currently have a bluetooth device to hand to test pairing with)
keyboard            mostly works although I can't get kde to show an evdev-managed option and some of the specialised function keys (accessed with fn + key) don't work: volume, sleep, brightness seem to work fine; microphone (?), radio seem not to; I'm not sure what F7 is meant to do; media keys are untested; webcam keys seem to work in some contexts and not others (which may be the expected behaviour); power button is untested
suspend             OK except that opening the lid wakes up the backlight but you never get a dialog box and the machine goes back to sleep; using the fn key to wake from this re-sleep usually works fine although I've had problems after sleeping following use of an external display - not always but a lot of changes seem to be too much for it in the end for some reason
hibernate           OK once I read the wiki page! However, there doesn't seem much point since it doesn't seem to be much faster resuming than booting normally.
hybrid suspend  pm-utils says not supported
battery               seems to drain quite fast. I certainly don't get anything like the 9.5 hours claimed for "some configurations" but that's only expected. 2-3 hours seems rather low but I haven't fully explored the options for addressing this issue yet.
trackpad             OK
trackpoint           seems OK but less tested. It was a bit of a pain to figure out how to configure the mouse for left-handed use and the trackpoint and trackpad for right-handed use but I think this was user ineptitude rather than anything else.
shutdown            works fine on AC; impossible to poweroff from runlevel 3 or 5 while on battery power (machine reboots instead)
multicard reader untested
sound                  OK except doesn't seem to work in firefox (untested in other browsers) and I'm not sure I haven't lost OS sounds such as login
webcam              OK
microphone        OK
vga out               OK
hdmi out             untested
headphones        untested

I think it is supposed to have some sort of mobile broadband interface. If so, this is essentially untested. It doesn't seem to be detected but I'm not sure what I'm looking for so I've probably just not looked in the right place/installed the right thing. I don't have the fingerprint reader installed. I upgraded to the Intel Centrino wireless as I felt more confident this would work with linux. I'm using the 320G hard drive. BIOS is configured to use drives in AHCI mode; to boot in UEFI or legacy mode with preference for UEFI; not to look for network boot rom; everything else basically enabled. I upgraded the RAM to 8G and this seems to be detected fine.

Note that the ThinkPad specific modifications available through AUR don't currently work with this model. So it isn't possible to configure the battery thresholds etc. as is often recommended. Basically, x121e will not load the relevant module. This is a known issue.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Dell XPS 15 seems to work well except for the Intel graphics-related issues (which seem to have disappearred in kernel 3.1.6). The 6-cell battery lasts around 3h45 using the i915 commands in GRUB.

i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1

What does not work: Hibernation (hangs upon restore), and the card reader is glitchy (sometimes recognizes cards, sometimes doesn't). The touchpad doesn't turn off with the keyboard command (Fn-F3).  The nVidia card works with bumblebee.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Old Dell Inspiron 2200.
It works really well although I am haivng issues with it just being an old laptop.  The battery is dead and I've had to resolder the power port back into the mobo.  The whole experience of taking the laptop apart and putting it back together was pretty fun though!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Asus EeePC 1000
Solid state 40GB hard drive
Upgraded to 2GB RAM

Wiped the factory Linux off of it after about 20 minutes.

Has been the perfect travel laptop. I type a lot, so the tablets have yet to draw my attention too much. Plus they weren't around when I got this thing. I have it running like a dream and it looks beautiful (the O/S with a nice basic wallpaper with conky on it as well as the all black and glossy exterior).

Lenovo Essential G770.

Base install had no issues, and neither did installing xorg or GNOME. Pretty much the only things I haven't tested yet is HDMI-out and the card reader. Everything else has worked flawlessly except for Hibernate, which didn't do anything.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Wow, I posted in this thread over 4 years ago, I can't believe what hardware I was using then.  Nowadays, I've got Arch running on my Google CR-48, using Gnome 3.  Thanks to some Archers on the forum, I got the 3G card working as well.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

M1330 was probably the best Linux laptop I've had yet.

Current workhorse is a Samsung Q430-11.  It's fantastic, but there are some problems:

need nvidiabl to adjust backlight
Intel graphics is not detected.  Nvidia graphics drains battery FAST.

It's quite a laptop, though.  I frequently have multiple virtual machines open simultaneously.  They all run without a hitch.

Toshiba Satellite A205-S4577. This laptop is roughly 2007 vintage. I installed Arch on it a couple weeks ago. Seems to work well.

Gateway NV55C

Everything works great!  The Intel graphics card works better on Arch than on any other Linux distro I've tried, although all the other ones were Debian-based

Lenovo 3000 N200

Works fine, except can not get the suspend/hibernate to wake up correctly: black / backlit screen, depending on whether I use nuoveau or nvidia drivers

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Thinkpad T420

Everything works flawlessly, even wireless injection using onboard Centrino Wireless-N 1000 (and compat-wireless-patched from aur) and RC6 enabled...

Has a couple of issues with video:
-> Tearing (intel hd3000) with compiz, mutter, etc but can be fixed by either installing latest compiz-core-git from aur (and enabling "force full screen redraws on repaint" from ccsm/workarounds) or setting CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling to /etc/environment...
-> Displays artifacts (very few) every now and then, a problem which gets better and better as time passes (and drivers get more bug fixes)

All-in-all, an exceptional choice for arch.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Acer Aspire One D255E-13DQkk

What works: Everything - I think.
Ethernet, WiFi, webcam, sound, power management (suspend, hibernate, resume, - all work), multi touch on the touchpad.  All good...

What doesn't work : Haven't found anything which doesn't work yet.

Great little netbook for light duties.

Dell Inspiron 1090 (Duo)

The only thing I have found that does not work so far is the accelerometer, so screen needs to be rotated manually. Multitouch screen is working.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

An old IBM thinkpad t23, 1ghz Pentium III, 512 mb and an savage card with 16 mb. Everything works out of the box, i only needed to add a suspend script to set the sound levels for suspending.

If it ain't broke, broke it then fix it.

Runs elinks great! wink
LXDE would be fine, but the trident driver has been giving my hell so far.

IBM Thinkpad i series 1300
Celeron 700Mhz
384MBs RAM
The wireless B card that came with it didn't work, upgraded to an AR5001x+.
Haven't got the Ethernet port to wok, yet.
Trident CyberBlade A1i VGA card

Re: Laptops which run Arch

ASUS eeepc 900

Installed a few things to make it run a bit smoother under heavy load (such as verynice and profile-sync-daemon). Created my own python script for managing my fan speeds as well (as I found the normal speeds too slow).

Everything works flawlessly.
