Re: Laptops which run Arch

Gateway LT3103u Netbook
Athlon 64 1.2Ghz single-core processor
2GB RAM
ATI X1270 R600 Graphics (issues with this one)
Arch i686 w/ xf86-video-ati

Okay, I've submitted this laptop to this thread before, but in reality it didn't work for the reasons I said, and the fix is relevant enough to repost and mention.

The card is dropping X as often as you scroll a window, but only under certain conditions:

Can't: use proprietary graphics (thanks ATI); Run framebuffer at alternate resolutions (modeset)
Shouldn't: Run x86_64 even though it's a 64bit processor
Should: Run i686 or lower, because it just works easier than the alternate. Not sure on why this is
Must: use open-source driver; use nomodeset

It's all good now. All of these things are strange as to why/why not, but it just happens this way. I think it's important enough to share so others with similar hardware issues can know how to deal. It's taken me months to figure this one out.

Main Arch Setup: HP Pavillion p7-1209, Quad-Core i3-2120 3.3Ghz, 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD, Intel Graphics
Laptop Arch Setup: Gateway lt3103u Netbook, AMD Athlon64 1.2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD, ATI X1270 R600

Re: Laptops which run Arch

ASUS K53SV

Core i7 II Generation
8 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce GT530M
Storage 750GB
Original OS FreeDOS.

What works very well:

  • Bumblebee from AUR works for the Optimus graphics card.

  • Bluetooth.

  • Wifi.

  • Sound

  • Touchpad

  • Connect to TV through HDMI

  • Battery - gives 4+ hours even when I'm running KDE desktop and two VMs on KVM

  • Laptop is completely silent if Nvidia card is off

  • Everything not listed in any of the other lists

What works fairly OK:

  • Webcam. It's a shitty one

  • CD Drive. Occasionally gets stuck in a loop

What doesn't work:

  • Sound Through HDMI

  • "Ice Cool" technology - laptop runs slightly hot at 49C - hotter if I'm playing a game on optirun

I'm a Chinese student. I'm sure to be pleased to see you thought highly of Chinese made laptop, but the fact is that not every laptop our factories made is work that well. But, of course, every can be fine if you are super in this field.

By the way, ThinkPad is a good alternative. I'm using it.

Lenovo G580GL

Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-2328M CPU @ 2.20GHz
4GB RAM 1600MHz
15.6" screen
Arch x86_64

Wireless: BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller
Does not work by default, works ONLY with broadcom-wl driver, oh and with logical name eth1 big_smile Every kernel update u need to recompile broadcom-wl. Otherwise, great internet speed without interrupts.

Ethernet: AR8162 Fast Ethernet
Does not work by default. Needs alx-driver from aur.

Bluetooth: Forget about it, uses broadcom combo wireless/bluetooth, this thing is dead i will never get it to work :S

With no internet access and this beeing my single pc in the house it was hell to get system up and running.
But a great laptop otherwise. Super quiet, battery 5.5 h. Intel i3 compiles like mad big_smile

Not getting usb 3.0 speeds, works on win7 which i use only for gaming once in a while. Still working on this one.
All in all great laptop tongue

Acer emachines 525.For wireless b43-fwcutter and firmware needs to be installed so the wireless can work. Also "nomodeset" must be added becouse otherwise it boots into a black screen. No other problems.
Laptop is originaly with:2GB ram ddr2 667GHz,250 HDD 5400 RPM and Intel Celeron 900 2,2GHz.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm running Arch on Asus G1s
Everything worked "straight out of the box". Nothing "special" needed to be done.

Install. Followed Arch's wiki various articles about laptops, took a few advices.
Even better, is that the OLED-display and LEDS on the laptop worked out of the box too.
* OLED display: /sys/class/asus_oled/oled_1/
* Leds: /sys/class/asus::{gaming,mail,toucpad}/

Bad thing is that there are not many programs out there that can use these.

I am currently working on a few python scripts that communicates with the OLED-display.
Will use static images, animations, text messages and a whole bunch of options.
Currently have a bash script that works kinda well, but bash scripts aren't known for their performance, so animations are flaky at its best.
I know I could write it all in C, but I want these things to be easily editable and easy to use "as is" for everyone.

EDIT:
See this thread for details on how to use the OLED display utilities I've made: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153279

I'm going to try to dual-boot Arch + Windows 7 Home Premium on a g6-2103ax. The Arch installer USB was able to detect everything ok (apart from KMS), but I've got to figure out the best way to partition it so that Windows doesn't complain, as my first attempt went horribly wrong o_0

Not that I know of.
Also, I would install Windows first. And then Linux last...
Windows will sort of the partitions it needs, and then you can use the rest for Linux.

HP dv4 with AMD chipset.

DO NOT BUY! The electronics are fin e and do what they are supposed to do,  but the cover is falling apart.
And I did take good care of it. But the plastic that hold the screen in place broke of just opening and closing.
Now the screen is falling off. It's more of a desktop than a laptop now, cuz I can't close the screen.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Installed yesterday onto a Dell Inspiron N5050 with only the two snags of breaking my bootloader, which was my fault and easy to fix, and not loading gnome, which was a simple installation of Intel-specific video drivers to fix. In short, it works great, practically out of the box. I'm loving Arch!

Sony Vaio SVE14A290X with touchscreen, backlit keyboard, and clickpad (e.g. like macbook touchpads that click). Arch is running quite nicely. I'm writing from Firefox, in Gnome 3, with Compiz.

The GTK3 inertial scrolling (with the touchscreen) if very nice.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

For a little over a year now I've been using an Acer AO722-BZ454 netbook.

Specifications:
AMD C-60, 1 Ghz Dual Core
2 GB DDR3
11.6" glossy screen
250GB 5400RPM SATA HDD
Built in webcam
3x USB 2.0 ports
HDMI out port
Audio/Microphone ports
Full size keyboard (the keys are regular laptop size)

When the battery is fully charged, I average about 4 hours and 30 minutes of use. Almost everything works without issue, except HDMI audio. Since kernel 3.3, HDMI audio for the evergreen family is supported; but for whatever reason, when the kernel line "radeon.audio=1" is enabled, HDMI outputs only a black screen. Luckily, my HDTV has a stereo port that I hook a male to male 3.5 mm cable into to enable audio.

If you look around, you can probably find this laptop for under $300.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Toshiba Satellite  C855-S5308

I purchased this machine at a BestBuy for $400.00; I immediately erased the Win 8 install and started a fresh install of Arch (2012-12-01). So far the laptop has taken wonderfully to Arch. I had some trouble with the install but that was because I didn't understand UEFI, which was nothing that the Arch boards and the beginners guide couldn't help me get straightened out. I am now running HerstluftWM and all my other favorite programs. At the time of this initial writing I have not yet started to work on getting the sound working. I will update on that as I go along. However, two things I found really refreshing, shut the lid for sleep works OOTB! And, wireless is spotty during the install but once the wifi software is correctly set up it's very dependable and fast (I am experiencing the full joy of 802.11n, something my last wifi card was not able to deliver due to some compatibility issues.)

If you're in the market to purchase a new laptop and would like to know something about the  C855-S5308 just shoot me a message and I will get after it as soon as I have opportunity. I will also continue to update this with my experiences with this machine. I personally found the task of researching and buying a new laptop kind of stressful because I was afraid I would get it home only to discover major issues. So if there's some way I can help with your research I'd be glad.

Notes:

Sound: Install alsa-utils, run alsamixer unmute the master channel / everything works fine.

Wireless: Ran great until today. I allowed the battery to die and now I cannot seem to get a wireless connection with just wifi-menu as I was doing before. Will update when I figure out the fix.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

HP Compaq nx9420

Everything automagically works. Power management is OK, it works about 2:00 hours on my old battery.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8 GHz (great, I use it in 32 bit mode)
RAM: 3 GB DDR2 SODIMM (more than enough)
HDD: Toshiba 120 GB SATA 1 (I only use about 2 GB for Arch + 20 GB for my data, lol big_smile)
GPU: Ati Radeon X1600 (uses open source drivers, works pretty good, gets very hot but typical for these laptops since it's actually a graphic card)
Chipset: Intel 945 + ICH7

WiFi (Intel), Bluetooth (Broadcom) and LAN (Broadcom) work great. Use Wicd for network management, smaller and better than NetworkManager.
DVD burner works. I've never used the PC Card and Smart Card readers, but they appear to be working OK in Windows, here too.
Card reader works, but you can't boot the system from memory cards.
If you intend to boot from USB stick, make sure the Legacy USB support is enabled in BIOS.
Fan management is totally automatic, you can't change the fan speed. Temperature sensors work, though.
I don't use Laptop Mode Tools, since I didn't gain anything from it in power saving, the kernel does all the tricks by itself. Try powertop to see for yourself.
The HDD shock protection works, install hpfall from AUR.

PS: Oh, and I forgot, the sound is extremely LOUD, I love it, I make small parties with no speakers necessary big_smile

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Alienware M14X R2 as it arrived 32 GB mSATA drive, 500 GB SATA drive, and 8 GB ram memory.
Installed 64 bit arch linux
I boosted the mSATA drive from 32 GB to 256 GB ram memory 16 GB SATA harddrive 750 GB
I have the nvidia 650M graphics card with 2 GB on board ram and the Intel i7 3.7 processor. I placed the root /opt and a /data partition on the mSATA drive using gdisk to partition the disk. On the SATA drive I placed the a 32 MB bios boot partition, a 500 MB boot partition (with the legacy boot flag), then a logical volume with swap, /var, /home, and three other partitons for development.
I have so far installed X with bumblebee working and gnome desktop. Things I have left to do, install pyalienfx, sound and all my development software (Java, Android, Arduino, Video Editing, and anything that I can use to chase the cats around the house). It has become one of my cats favorite places to sit and hang out so I guess it was money well spent. I did not bother with UEFI as I do not use Windows, I installed from a USB thumb drive and for the first time ever for me I was able to install over wifi because of the intel wifi card, in the past all my other laptops had Broadcom cards. I hope this helps someone out there as I could not find much info when I ordered it and some folks on one of the laptop forums I used to try and get help thought I was a bit flakey for wanting to install linux on it much less as the only OS.
