Aspire 3680 works. Some models will require ndiswrapper for wireless support. A regression in kernel 2.6.22 broke software suspend on at least one model (3680-2633), but that's the only real problem I've found.

Dell Inspiron 6400, everything I've tried works.
- Don't have any PCMCIA cards, so no idea if it works
- Intel 3945ABG works (using Intellinuxwireless iwlwifi drivers), NetworkManager /knetworkmanager.
- Media keys work now (via /etc/xprofile as suggested in the Inspiron 6400 thread over at the laptop board)
- Powersave functions (suspend /hibernate, CPU throttling) working (klaptop, might try kpowersave)
- ATI Radeon x1400... well, it's an ATI, so it's more "working'ish" than anything else. Beryl /Emerald via Xgl.
- MMC card reader not tested yet, but should work.
- iPod syncs just fine (yeah, it's not a not a laptop issue, but important to me anyway )

Glad to hear it all runs well. I am just about to call Dell (in New Zealand) to order one of these,
and I intend to run Arch, so thanks tons for the reassuring post.
I was going to go nVidia graphics because I had hear strange reports about blurry screens with the
X3100. Plus, I generally go nVidia if I get the option. Great to hear the x3100 is working, though
Perhaps I'll rethink, and save a few dollars.

Has there been any updates on ENE Card Reader support in any kernel updates?
Just curious if anybody has gotten them working yet. The card readers are generally found in ACER laptops.

I love it. Modern Mac's running Linux. "Uh, Steve, we like your machines, but the your OS isn't that hot."
What's not to like? They run really good standard components, and the screens on those ibook pros are
unbelievably crisp and bright. I suppose price ... I saved $2000NZD and bought a dell. Awaiting delivery.

I got another laptop working (almost) perfectly with Arch!
Toshiba Satellite M35-S456
Mostly works out of the box, but few things need tweaking:
1) Removing "ata_generic" from the modules line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf seems to improve HD performance.
2) Vbetool is needed to flick the display off and back on after suspend/hibernate ("vbetool dpms off" and "vbetool dpms on"). It is also necessary to add "Option "NvAGP" "1"" to xorg.conf display section and to blacklist "intel_agp" module in /etc/rc.conf.
3) Needs ipw2200-fw package for wireless.
The only remaining problem is that not all fn keys work as they should (fnfx doesn't seem to work with this model for some reason), but this is a minor issue that can be easily worked around by defining different key shortcuts for the needed functionalities.
EDIT: Fnfx works after "options toshiba_acpi hotkeys_over_acpi=0" is added to /etc/modprobe.conf.
Voila - it is working perfectly now

Acer 5570Z
Wireless and most everything else works out of the box after install and basic module setup (Synaptics, etc.)
915Resolution required.
Many extra keys need to be set up manually.
Volume/Mute keys do not work via hardware. Brightness keys okay.
Need to use a recent daily build of alsa-driver to get a snd-hda-intel that controls the speakers and headphones properly. Current Arch driver makes it impossible to mute only one.
All I can really remember. Aside from the ALSA thing, nothing was particularly hard.

I use a Toshiba Tecra M2
It took a while to get *everything* up and running, but all the essentials worked out-of-the-box:
- network/wireless
- software suspend upon installation of powersaved
It took me a while to get graphics acceleration working... I've been fiddling around with it for a couple months, and finally solved it yesterday .

Runs flawlessly on my Macbook Core 2 Duo 1.83. Mactel support is phenomenal!
Only thing that doesn't work is the webcam, since I wiped OSX off the hard disk.

Dell Inspiron 4150
Recently installed successfully on my 5-year-old laptop, which has a 1.6GHz Pentium 4, 384MB RAM, ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics. Wireless (atheros/madwifi PCMCIA card) works great, with WPA. As with several other distros I tried, suspend/resume works fine BUT the graphics card gets fubar during resume, making the feature effectively unusable (I can use the keyboard normally after resume, and can use regular keystrokes to reboot, but the screen is always scrambled). This is not a problem with Arch, but a general issue with this graphics card. KDEMod works great even with the small amount of RAM. I've had less overheating with Arch/KDEMod than with any other distro on this machine.
Very glad to have found Arch. Distro hopping ends here.
If anyone happens to know how to tweak suspend for the Radeon Mobility 7500, I'm all ears (I've tried lots of stuff with no success: boot parameters, vbetool options, etc.)

Have you tried playing with hibernate script? It makes it easy to use a bunch of tools like vbetool, unloading modules, stoping daemons, as well as something called radeontool (I think that's what it's called) which might be of interest to you. I've only used it with conjunction of suspend2 but I think it also works with other suspend/hibernate methods. You can find it in the repos. Also, you can make a separate thread about your suspend issues - you're likely to get more substantial help that way.

A little bit, but not in a systematic way yet. Thanks for the suggestion, I'll certainly look into it more.

Yes, I realize that. It's just that I've pretty much given up on getting resume to work with this graphics card (given what I've learned from various other forums, etc.), and have resigned myself to living without it until I get a new computer.
Thanks again for your comments. I'll add here that I'm finding the arch community to be just excellent.

I use a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 4150. Netgear wg511t, using the madwifi drivers and wpa. I prefer gnome, and use the laptop mainly for just surfing the web on the go.
Arch runs fantastically on it. I've had it on here for a couple years now.

My new Dell Vostro 1500 laptop works perfectly with arch (sans the winmodem, which I couldn't test if I wanted to).
I have the intel wireless and the internal webcam. Sound was an absolute nightmare at first but it's really just a creative combination of unmuting to get it to work. Card reader works very well, which is a welcome surprise.

Arch64 works fine on it. Haven't tried i686 yet(on it).

I made sure to upgrade to the intel wireless, so I just use the ipw3945 packages, and the kamikaze kernel I use now has them built in. Unfortunately I don't have experience with ndiswrapper for the broadcom (dell wireless) wireless chipset, though there are many, many guides out there geared towards getting it to work. Search for "ndiswrapper dell wireless" or somesuch.

I have an Acer Aspire 5630 that works fine with both arch i686 and x86_64. The only things that do not function are the extra keyboard keys and the webcam, and I haven't tested the media card reader because I have no need for it. Acer claims that this laptop has bluetooth built in, but when it came installed with Vista, the bluetooth didn't work so I'm skeptical about it.

Compaq Presario V3000. Everything works except PCMCIA. And I'm not so fussy, meaning I deal with minor issues, I don't count them as issues, however most of you would.
I need real, proper pen and paper for this.
