In my normal setup I use SDDM. But on boot it only shows the login prompt and freezes almost instantly.
So to test if its just SDDM, I switched to xinit and startx. Then the pc boots up normally and I can login, but when i run startx, it only shows the black loadingscreen of KDE and freezes again.
The freezes started when kernel 4.9 was released then I switched to lts. Now Im on lts44.
Im using an Intel i5 3570k with onboard graphics and libinput driver
jounal of a freeze (not complete i think dsmesg of next boot shows [ 16.217057] systemd-journald[165]: File /var/log/journal/122ba992fa044105a20811748c3559ed/user-1000.journal corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing.)

That journal is unremarkable. Kudos for having the microcode package installed and configured properly ![]()
At the 'Freeze', can you change consoles with Ctrl-Alt-F2 (or F3 through F6)?
Can you ssh into the box from another machine?
Can you ping the box from another machine?

Thanks that helped in some way.
If I really spam Ctrl-Alt-F2 and am fast enough I get into the console login.
Then I Switched back to F1 and it didnt even load SDDM screen but froze again.
After a few seconds I got a Kernel Panic.
But the good thing, switching to console fixed the log file.

Have you tried other Display Manager's to logon to your system? Plus do you use any proprietary graphics card drivers on your system - if so how have you set it up?
Arch + GNOME

Please post back your results to help others.
Offline
I didn't try other Display Mangers only with xinit after i logged in on console.
The only driver I had installed till today was xf86-video-intel. I removed it, but it didnt change anything.
Offline
I played around with display drivers (modesetting and xf86-intel)
With Intel drivers and this xorg.conf i got it to work.
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "DRI" "False"
Option "NoAccel" "True"
EndSectionBut this makes KDE almost unusable.
Is there a way to use modesetting without DRI?
How can I obtain further logfiles? I only had crash information in journal this one time and after the pc reset /sys/class/drm/card0/error was empty.
Offline
No I believe modesetting is dependent upon DRI. Have you tried newer kernels such as 4.11.9 or 4.12.2 or 4.13rc1?
Edit:
4.13rc1 not 4.12rc1

All kernels have the same behaviour, they only work with intel driver and DRI + hardwareacceleration disabled
Offline
I would suggest bisecting between 4.8 and 4.9 to locate the bad commit and reporting the issue upstream once you have located that commit.
Offline
I don't know much about building kernels. If I for example want to build 4.8.17. Where do I start? Is editing the pkgbuild of lts44 good? Do I apply the same patches as in this build? For example console loglevel and sdhci revert.
Offline
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1700245 Covers bisecting the kernel unfortunately it is a bit more problematic bisecting 4.8 to 4.9 now as arch has moved to gcc7
so a patch will be needed for that and another patch may be needed because arch has enabled pie in gcc by default. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1722233
covers a possible work around to the gcc7 incompatibility.
Offline
With the help of your linked posts, I managed to finish bisecting the kernel.
I used the log2.h patch you mentioned and to disable pie I created this two patches for 4.8 and 4.7 (changed Ubuntu kernel patches)

drm/i915: Define a separate variable and control for RPS waitboost frequency
To allow the user finer control over waitboosting, allow them to set the
frequency we request for the boost. This also them allows to effectively
disable the boosting by setting the boost request to a low frequency.

Nice work on getting the build working and completing the bisection.
https://01.org/linuxgraphics/documentat … eport-bugs
You could also see if changing any of the power related parameters of the i915 module can avoid the panic. (`modinfo i915` for parameters, see here to set them )

After searching the bugtracker I think this has already been reported.
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=101049
Will try the fix now.
Edit: It worked
Thanks a lot for your help!
Although this was quite time consuming, I learned a lot.
