I am receiving the following messages when I startx:
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/encodings, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/speedo, removing from list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/util, removing from list!
All the other paths appear to be accepted, but these just won't take. I've tried a few things, even reinstalling them (except util...are those even fonts?). Anyway, I know encodings and speedo have fonts...it has to be something simple, but I've looked around and nothing stands out. Other than this problem, x starts up smoothly, so I really want to clear it up.

well, saw those messages some times, and iirc i have those atm too. but they just can be ignored imo.
anyway, try to comment out those in xorg.conf and check if it still complains.
Offline
The thing is that I want to have them available...it doesn't hurt to have them in xorg.conf since they are just ignored, but if I comment them out, they won't be used at all.
Maybe I need to add a module or a link or copy them somewhere? Any ideas?

Speedo is not used by XOrg any more. Not sure about encodings and util but are you sure they've got fonts in them.

So should I just remove the Speedo fonts?
And here are the contents of encodings and util. Honestly, I don't know if they are font files or not. But I know you can help me

Try updating the font cache as suggested in this thread.

kishd, thanks for the link...the weird thing is I read through that thread and didn't even notice it. After running the script, I was presented with the following:
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts": caching, 0 fonts, 11 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/encodings": caching, 0 fonts, 1 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/encodings/large": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi": caching, 398 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi": caching, 398 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/cyrillic": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/misc": caching, 55 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/util": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/TTF": caching, 93 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/Type1": caching, 29 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/speedo": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/artwiz-fonts": caching, 16 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/local": caching, 26 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts": skipping, no such directory
fc-cache: "/root/.fonts": skipping, no such directory
fc-cache: succeeded
Apparently the three directories in question do not contain fonts, so that solves that problem...I just removed the paths from my xorg.conf. However, my cyrillic directory is also listed as not containing fonts, but I don't receive an error message when starting X. The contents of cyrillic are:

Are these fonts that need to be extracted for some reason? Or are they not fonts at all. At least I solved the actual problem.

So should I just remove the Speedo fonts?
Sure... XOrg doesn't show them any more and there haven't been any changes to those fonts in about 10 years IIRC.
