When I installed arch I wasn't very experienced in what swap did and the proper swap size I would need for my system. I ended up making a swap partition that is 1GB in size even though I've got 8GB of ram. To make matters worse, the swap partition precedes the root partition making resizing not very easy. Would I be able to somehow transfer all the data in the root partition forward by 7GB to make space for the existing swap partition to extend into?

Wouldn't I then have a non working swap partition taking up hard drive space?

It's 1 GB.
You can go through the process of resizing your partitions, or you can set up a swap file.

Thank you for the help. I guess I'll just go with a swap file.

Do you need more than 1G of swap?
I need it for hibernate apparently.

Screw it. I've fully backed up my system and I'll try to move the root partition over. If it works I'll let you guys know. If I keep the partition order I don't think I'll need to change my bootloader configs.

total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 8060480 321120 7138788 150592 600572 7336820
Swap: 8388604 0 8388604
It worked and didn't mess up my installation, thank you for the help guys.

For anyone wondering what I did. I wasn't aware that if you launch a gparted live usb you can transfer a partition over as well as the data inside the partition. So I shifted it to the right by 7GB and expanded the swap by 7GB which was surprisingly simple.

For future reference it would have been a lot quicker to just delete the old swap and create a new, larger swap.
