Anyone tried compiling xscreensaver 5.00 and run it successfully?
The compilation was successful and had no error messages, but when I run it, the interface shows up, but no screensavers work. When I run the screensavers from the command line (/usr/local/libexec/xscreensaver), I get a segmentation fault error.
I'm using ati-fglrx.

Total ditto. I've tried changing permissions on /dev/nvidia*, added the recommended 00.rules to /etc/udev/rules.d/ and no luck. Games and 3D apps work great though. UT2004 is as smooth as butter fully cranked up, ET runs great, Planeshift (as good as it gets I suppose), and 3Ddesk all are flawless. Latest Nvidia drivers, kernel 2.6.17.8, and I'm in the "video" group though I didn't explicity create that group.

I found out what was causing the error. There was something wrong with the locale setting. Make sure the locale.gen in your /etc works and typing locale in the console produces something like this:
LANG=en_US.utf8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8"
LC_TIME="en_US.utf8"
LC_COLLATE=C
LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.utf8"
LC_NAME="en_US.utf8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8"

Flippn' genius! Thanks. Now my screen can look pretty before DPMS kicks in.
