For a custom keyboard layout to work in Xkb/Xorg a line must be appended to /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/evdev.xml.
The problem is that when Xorg is updated via pacman, this xml file is replaced. As a result, all custom keyboard layouts break each time Xorg is updated.
I'm pretty sure that this is a bug and that the solution is to have custom keyboard layouts defined in /etc/X11/xkb instead of /usr/X11/xkb. However, the only ticket I can find about this issue is from 2007: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo … bug=438940
There are many people with this issue. This Google search brings up many relevant results: https://www.google.com/search?site=&sou … verwritten
Some believe that simply calling setxkbmap from, for example, an .xinitrc file can circumvent this. This isn't true, since the setxkbmap command is rather limited in comparison to custom layouts as utilized in the xorg.conf file. For instance, plugging in an external keyboard will break your layout unless you specify a section for that keyboard in xorg.conf, which relies on the layout name being present in evdev.xml.
Thanks.

This isn't a proper fix, just a hacky workaround but you could always create a pacman hook that appends the required line whenever the file is updated.

This is what I plan on doing tomorrow, actually. A real fix would be nice, though.
