Any means of preventing lockups?

This had to be asked eventually... Is there a way to make my system automatically terminate any program that has stopped responding? I don't have *any* way of SSHing in from another box, and I would really like to be able to get out of XOrg lockups without rebooting...

Other than that I mean... With sysrq you have to terminate everything if you want to terminate one program, so you have to reboot anyway. Thanks anyway though.

I'm sure it can be done in python or bash by simply chcking if an application isn't responding(zombie) and forcing it to close. I'll try acouple expeirments tonight.
