amdgpu error on shutdown

I get this error when I shutdown my computer. It only happens when I enable my AMD hybrid graphics. This only happens occasionally but then it does not shutdown anymore. Then I have to hard reset the computer.

This was the main reason why I switched to other linux distros, hoping they would solve it for me. However it sometimes also happened there. Anyone know how to fix this?

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

This looks similar to the oops I get when I start amdgpu.

That being said, are you sure it's not a hardware problem?  And does it happen in the newest Ubuntu release?

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

Sorry for the late post. Though I might have solved the problem by installing xf86-video-ati. But then the problem happend yesterday again.

Yes it also happens in Ubuntu. I think starting with Ubuntu 16.04 there the same or similar problem. I posted the problem on reddit. I think there was a change in amd drivers or something.

Don't know if it is a hardware problem. Probably not. Because the problem happend also a long time ago. With Ubuntu 14.04 I had no such problem.

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

Ok, I think I have solved the problem. I just blacklisted the amdgpu module by creating a file in /etc/modprobe.d/. Now there are no errors of amdgpu in the journal anymore. I never needed amdgpu anyway, my gpu was to old and only has experimental support from amdgpu. I now use radeon module.

I hope I now solved the problem. If I do not post anything here than the problem is probably solved. Let's hope I do not have to post anymore anymore.

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

Update on that problem.

It did not solved it because with the radeon driver it does not detect my gpu and it never gets loaded. Do not know why it does not detect it. I have an AMD Radeon R5 M255.

And with amdgpu it does get detect but with this driver the error occurs. I also noticed that this error also happens sometimes when I play games with the AMD GPU. Because I recently learned how to change my hybrid graphics but using it can cause this error. And on shutdowns this still happens sometimes.

From duplicate thread.

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

Update from other Thread:

I have a computer with hybrid graphics Intel + AMD. The Intel GPU works fine but the AMD GPU has problems with the amdgpu driver. I know that R5 M255 Southern Islands has only experimental support. But the Radeon driver does not detect my AMD GPU for some reason. I tried blacklisting amdgpu and radeon but it seems that only the amdgpu driver is working. If the amdgpu only has experimental support, should there not be at least one driver that is fully working with my GPU? It can't be that my GPU has ONLY experimental support on Linux.

And the problem with the amdgpu driver is that it sometimes just freezes. When I shutdown the computer or when I play a game (that is GPU intense, not 100% sure) the game or the computer freezes. Below is one of the logs that I saved from the error: (got plenty of them)

Blacklisting:
I tried blacklisting amdgpu. The error is gone but the AMD GPU is not working anymore.
I tried blacklisting radeon. The amdgpu will be used and the error still persists.
I tried blacklisting both. Result like blacklist amdgpu.

Xorg:
What do you mean with Xorg configuration? The files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/? I do not have any files in that folder but there are files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/. There are the default config files. I did not change anything. The look like this (for radeon the exact same only with radeon):

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "AMDgpu"
    MatchDriver "amdgpu"
    Driver "amdgpu"
EndSection

I also tested it now with config files in the /etc folder. The results:
Both Drivers blacklisted, no config files: Not working GPU.
Nothing blacklisted, no config files: amdgpu will be used and error persists.
Radeon blacklist, no config files: amdgpu will be used and error persists.
Amdgpu blacklist, no config files: Not working GPU.
Radeon blacklist, with config files:Xorg error, no devices detected.
Amdgpu blacklist, with config files:Xorg error, no devices detected.

The config files looks like this (same for radeon):

Section "Device"
    Identifier "AMDgpu"
    Driver "amdgpu"
EndSection

I have for every test one Xorg.log. I can post it if needed. The interesting thing is that with the Radeon config file, it will list a bunch of AMD GPUs but the R5 M255 is not listed in there. I also do not understand why amdgpu is not working anymore with a config file.

PRIME
I am using PRIME. I know that the AMD GPU is not working because PRIME is not working anymore.

I'm not sure if that ever worked for anyone, but having an empty /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d when managing hybrid graphics is not a good idea, don't you think?

Again, using PRIME and hybrid graphics requires a bit of effort, don't expect magic out of the box. Start from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hybrid_graphics and make sure you undo any possible configuration mistake you made before asking for support. Once you're done, come back with at least a decent xorg.conf.d.

Yes, Xorg.log will be fine, along with any driver and kernel parameters you're using. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AM … 29_support

From duplicate thread.

I forgot that I still had the other thread. And I would like to do what R00KIE suggested but I do not what he means by that.

https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/ … -bugs.html https://bugzilla.kernel.org Product Drivers Component Video(DRI - non Intel)

If anything of the above doesn't produce results, again consider reporting the bug upstream as R00KIE and loqs suggested.

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

PRIME:
Does it not count as working when I use DRI_PRIME=1 and the dGPU is used? I also monitored with radeontop that the amd gpu is being used when using DRI_PRIME=1. In Arch Wiki about Hybrid Graphics just redirects me to the PRIME wiki and there it says that I just need to have a working DRI_PRIME=1. Am I missing something about Hybrid graphics and PRIME?

Xorg:
I now tested Xorg with config files for all gpus.
All Xorg config files looks like this:

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
EndSection
Section "Device"
	Identifier "Radeon"
	Driver "radeon"
EndSection
Section "Device"
	Identifier "AMD"
	Driver "amdgpu"
EndSection

For every test I obviously only used the config files that was needed for the currently tested drivers.
In the first test I do not understand why the radeon module is unloaded again. Does it not detect my gpu?

The result for Test 1 is that Intel is working but the amd gpu is not working. Not working I mean DRI_PRIME=1 is not switching it anymore and xrandr --listproviders is only listing the Intel GPU.

The result for Test 2 is that Intel is working and the amd gpu too. DRI_PRIME=1 is switching to the dGPU and xrandr --listproviders is listing both GPUs. The only problem here is that the freeze probably still occurs (Did not test that).

Test 1: Intel + Radeon (amdgpu blacklisted and xorg drivers removed)

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

@lo1 That's incorrect in this case, empty /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d are absolutely normal and it is expected to just work with the open drivers and PRIME.

@Sakkaku you get a kernel oops it's unlikely that any xorg configuration is responsible for this. Furthermore you get the oops on shutdown, which is likely long after xorg has already closed. As mentioned by ROOKIE you absolutely should report this to the kernel devs. Since the oops talks about power management, one thing you can try is disabling any power management tools you are using, like TLP or similar and booting with

amdgpu.runpm=0

in addition to your other parameters, and/or different firmware loading types like

amdgpu.fw_load_type=2 # or 0

since that seems to be involved. Even if any of these happen to work out, you should still make a report since the chosen defaults appear to be buggy

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

I already reported this problem yesterday. I have had this problem since the first Ubuntu 16.04 release where they first used the amdgpu driver, so I did not expect to fix this error. I asked on many forums and never found a solution. Still I will keep trying to fix this, now with the submitted bug.

But what I am curious about is why the radeon driver is not working. If amdgpu only has experimental support for GCN 1.0, there has to be another driver that fully supports it. I should have been more precise about the second thread that I opened. It was not exactly about the amdgpu problem. But rather what driver I should use for my R5 M255 that is stable and fully supported, unlike the amdgpu.

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

What's your lspci -k output? I have a feeling that that GPU seems to simply be within the cutoff point of support for radeon, maybe newer kernels have already moved a few GPU-Ids over to exclusive amdgpu use even if they are "older"

Edit: Oh and also likely important, there's a huge amdgpu patch set landing with 4.15 so you might want to try out if the bug is reproducible on e.g. the linux-mainline package from the AUR

When will 4.15 be released? I will just wait for the official release, so that I just have to update the kernel. Takes to long to install from AUR and complicated.

miffe provides an unofficial repository with the precompiled linux-mainline package.

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

Yeah as we can see, the lspci -k doesn't even list radeon as a valid driver anymore, so it definitely got removed from the radeon support list. (it would show up in the kernel modules line, even if not actively being used)

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

Is there a precompiled version of this linux kernel for Arch? Apparently my current linux is really old and uses old amdgpu drivers (See bug report). I found a unoffical repository for the lastest mesa but I cannot find this exact linux kernel version for amdgpu.

No.  Not sure why drm-next-4.17-wip is being suggested over amd-staging-drm-next and even more so over 4.15-rc9 as the first thing you should test.

Describing what was the current stable release at the time of filing as really old is somewhat strange.  Did you try 4.15-rc9 before trying something even more experimental?

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

I tried 4.15-rc9 but not long enough to get a freeze on shutdown. But I get some freezes when playing a game however I do not get a bug trace in the journal.

I do not know if I got one in my current version because it somehow does not freeze anymore when I need it to. I will keep testing it and report back if I have more information.

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

Now that 4.15 is released, I am using this version for all the tests. I still have not got an error on shutdown but I do now get a bug trace when a game freezes.

So I assume the error is still happening on this version. Should I now post this on bugzilla or is it still not going to help because it is too old?

As there has been no developer response asking you to use a newer version I would post it.
Edit:
The following may catch the out of memory condition earlier.

Re: amdgpu error on shutdown

Hi guys,
I had a similar problem on a Dell Latitude E5470.
I had the follow error in the logs once reboot the system after a suspend:

Jun 21 07:50:57 sabayon kernel: [drm:atom_op_jump [amdgpu]] *ERROR* atombios stuck in loop for more than 5secs aborting
Jun 21 07:50:57 sabayon kernel: [drm:amdgpu_atom_execute_table_locked [amdgpu]] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing 73EA (len 272, WS 0, PS 4) @ 0x7433
Jun 21 07:50:57 sabayon kernel: [drm:amdgpu_atom_execute_table_locked [amdgpu]] *ERROR* atombios stuck executing 6036 (len 70, WS 0, PS 8) @ 0x605C
Jun 21 07:50:57 sabayon kernel: [drm:amdgpu_device_resume [amdgpu]] *ERROR* amdgpu asic init failed

And the X never came back to life.

The trick as suggested above was to disable the amdgpu Power Management

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="amdgpu.runpm=0"

Now suspend and hibernate works like a charm!.

The other kernel options returned to me:

amdgpu: unknown parameter 'fw_load_type' ignored
si_support not found

Thanks guys.
