[SOLVED] Nvidia PRIME: discrete GPU is used instead of IGPU

Hello,

I set up my Arch system a few months ago. After two days of struggling with hybrid graphics I got xorg to run on the discrete GPU, but only after calling

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0; xrandr --auto

as described here.

Now I dared to make another attempt but failed. Here is what I have tried:

  • modify xorg.conf to a few variations which mostly did not have any effect or prevented xorg from running

  • messing around with the xrandr commands in the optimus.desktop files (see URL)

  • callling different xrandr commands (eg.

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0; xrandr --auto

) from the DE, mostly had no effect either

What I found out:

  • it seems the optimus.desktop files do not get executed (added a touch command that should have made a new file in my home directory)

  • calling xrandr --setprovideroutputsource NVIDIA-0 modesetting (reverse PRIME, described here as well as xrandr --setprovideroffloadsink NVIDIA-0 modesetting returns

X Error of failed request: BadValue

I don't know what to try next. All I could find was the statement on the wiki on the Nvidia PRIME page:

GPU-intensive applications should be rendered on the more powerful discrete card.

which implies that the integrated GPU should be chosen automatically.

This is the xorg log:

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia PRIME: discrete GPU is used instead of IGPU

You will want to reverse all of your changes so far and instead follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee if you want to have dynamic switching.

Dynamic switching with PRIME currently doesn't work like it does with the open drivers. You will either have to use the provider output source method which will render everything on nvidia, or use bumblebee.

Edit: Oh I've just seen that the PRIME page was updated to mention that it should be possible, however I don't see a single reference to an Nvidia setup and at least everything I've heard[1] mentions that the traditional offloading method is still not possible. It's easy to believe that amdgpu-pro would work but I very much doubt the Nvidia cards ever worked with it (I'd like to hear the authors source/rationale, strange).

[1] And this is as official as it gets, a sticky thread on the nvidia boards: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi … onization/

Re: [SOLVED] Nvidia PRIME: discrete GPU is used instead of IGPU

NVIDIA has no plans to support PRIME render offload at this time.

Seems like Bumblebee is really the only option right now and for a long time.

I think PRIME is also needed when you only use the discrete GPU, as the discrete GPU output will still have to go trough the integrated GPU. Though the wiki article made it seem as if GPU offloading would be possible with the closed-source drivers, which it apparently isn't. I added a note for clarification.

I have tried Bumblebee at least twice before, but the xserver would always terminate and leave a black screen. Turns out I only had to remove the xorg.conf from the PRIME setup and everything works fine now.

Thank you for your help.
