[SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

Yesterday, I re-installed arch. I did everything like i previously did, used cable instead of wifi, installed base-devel group using mainline kernel, rebooted to installation, set up gui (installed gnome 3), set up wifi from gnome settings. However, this time wifi icon on top bar shows question mark even though i have a normal connection (can browse using firefox, update system etc.). I checked connection status using nmcli and result is this:

[sercan@sercan-Lenovo-Z5070]: ~>$ nmcli general
STATE CONNECTIVITY WIFI-HW WIFI WWAN-HW WWAN
connected limited enabled enabled enabled enabled

The situation is same with every wireless network i tried. However, when i plug a usb wifi dongle (TP-Link TL-WN727N), question mark is gone and nmcli shows this

[sercan@sercan-Lenovo-Z5070]: ~>$ nmcli general
STATE CONNECTIVITY WIFI-HW WIFI WWAN-HW WWAN
connected full enabled enabled enabled enabled

When i checked other topics, i saw that this issue was releated to gnome and networkmanager, which i use 3.24.2 and 1.8.2-1 versions respectively. What could be the cause of this issue?

I remember those topics, but were they actually resolved with updates to networkmanager?

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

9/10 times these issues are not due to networkmanager but failure to connect to the internet due to a lower rooted problem, read faulty/unstable drivers most likely, the only thing I could think of that makes this networkmanager's fault is MAC Address Randomization so you might want to try and disable that. What's the output of

dmesg

during such an issue?

I will also try disabling MAC Address Randomization.

Edit: Disabling MAC Address Randomization had no effect. "nmcli g" still shows limited connectivity

Reply to twelveeighty: It is said that this issue was around when gnome 3.12 and networkmanager 0.9.9.8 were around.

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

I experience the same issue since yesterday when I upgraded several packages (e.g. systemd)..
I do not know how to resolve this issue; although my Internet works Networkmanager claims it is limited

If some other people confirms it, we can assume(?) a systemd update caused networkmanager to think connection is limited while it is working properly.

My problem is that i use eduroam, which really causes problems, at school. So i need to know if my connection is really limited so that i can look solutions to fix it separately.

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

Recently started seeing this on my both desktops running Arch and GNOME. I'm using NerworkManager and NM applet. When connected with wired connection I do see strange question mark icon. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ombn39cotso7s … 2.png?dl=0

I can see

Aug 17 23:52:35 archbox NetworkManager[16692]: <info> [1503006755.7425] connectivity: (enp0s31f6) timed out

after trying to send request to 'http://www.archlinux.org/check_network_status.txt'. Tried to do it using CURL and got back response so the link is working.

Here are the logs for NetworkManager (I set log level to TRACE).

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

There's already a topic on this in Newbie Corner. Merging with it.

For record, title was: GNOME NetworkManager applet - strange wired connection icon with "?"

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

After some investigations I found out this has to do be the latest curl update to version 7.55.1-1. Downgrading back to 7.54.1-2 did solve the problem for me.

EDIT
Downgrading to 7.54.x solved the problem for me on 3 machines.

Downgrading to 7.54.x 'solved' the problem for me too.

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

Since i performed a fresh install, i cannot downgrade curl to 7.54.x. However, since people who encountered this issue fixed it by downgrading curl, i guess this topic can be marked as solved.

Thank you. I didn't know the existance of Arch Linux Archive. Now i downgraded curl and nmcli reports that connectivity is full.

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

Downgrading curl isn't a long term solution as pacman depends on it. Has anyone filed a bug report?

Can one of those affected confirm if curl 7.55.1-2 fixes the issue?

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

Yeah, it seems that new curl package does the trick, connectivity is reported as full again.

Re: [SOLVED]GNOME System Tray Shows Question Mark on Wifi Icon

Not sure if I'm allowed to replay to this since the last post is quite old. I apologize in advance.

Anyway, there is a question mark on my wifi-symbol. I have Network Manager and network-manager-applet-indicator installed. I'm using a VPN if that is of any help.

I also have netctl and dhcpcd installed. Being a total noob still, I don't even know exactly what these do.

Downgrading curl didn't help in my case.

The original bug for this is fixed and your post contains too little usable information. If you need to make a new topic about this, verify that you actually get an outside connection over this VPN, clarify which kind of VPN connection this is, post

systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled

in [ code ] [ /code ]  (and don't just randomly downgrade curl, you are quite likely to break important parts of your system).
