[SOLVED] Installation on i686

I supposed there would so many questions about this topic, but I couldn't find any of them...

I've tried to install Arch on an old computer, but when I booted from the installation media an error was displayed:

This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU
Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU

So I thought "well, I just need the 32bit iso to install Arch..." But I couldn't find it. Then I read this at the Arch Wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_guide):

Installation guide wrote:

Arch Linux should run on any x86_64-compatible machine

I must deduce I won't be able to boot an official ArchLinux iso on my 32bit Compaq mini?

Re: [SOLVED] Installation on i686

Arch is phasing out 32 bit until november 2017. So the supported architecture is x86_64 i asume.

Re: [SOLVED] Installation on i686

There aren't many questions about this because it has been announced.

https://www.archlinux.org/news/phasing- … 6-support/

Look into www.archlinux32.org - a community maintained project to keep i686 architecture alive, however be aware that we will treat it like all derivatives, you won't be able to ask for support here.

Edit: Whelp, too late tongue

Re: [SOLVED] Installation on i686

Keep in mind that you can use the archiso installation media they provide to pacstrap a new install from the official archlinux.org repositories for i686, and then switch to the archlinux32 repos in November. Though the archlinux32 repositories *should* be fully functional by now, there were still a few minor kinks in the build system and not every package was able to be rebuilt from scratch in an archlinux32 chroot yet.

More testing is of course entirely welcome. smile
