ALSA/Pulse can only find HDMI, won't find my headphone jacks

Hello!

I've done my best to research this but I can't seem to find anyone else with the same problem. This started randomly after unsuspending my PC, no relevant packages were updated the prior night.

It seems as though my sound card is recognized by the system, however ALSA/Pulse will not pick it up. Here is my lspci

00:1f.3 Audio device: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H HD Audio (rev 31)
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Device a0b2
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 32, IRQ 132

	Memory at df300000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 3
	Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
	Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
	Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

00:1f.4 SMBus: Intel Corporation Sunrise Point-H SMBus (rev 31)
--
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GP106 High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)
	Subsystem: eVga.com. Corp. Device 6161
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 17
	Memory at df080000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 3
	Capabilities: [68] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [78] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
	Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
	Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
	Kernel modules: snd_hda_intel

The first audio device should be my headphone jacks. Below is aplay output

Ultimately, all it can find is my HDMI output. It also seems as though it's not showing up in /dev/snd

[21:11:55] chris@NotBroken /dev/snd % ls
by-path/ controlC1 hwC1D0 pcmC1D3p pcmC1D7p pcmC1D8p pcmC1D9p seq timer

That being said, I also have no idea how to read that. I'm assuming controlC1 is my HDMI output, as when I run fuser, this is the output:

                     USER PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC1: chris 995 F.... pulseaudio

I hope that I've provided enough information to receive help, please let me know if there's any additional info needed. Thanks!

Re: ALSA/Pulse can only find HDMI, won't find my headphone jacks

For ALSA-related output, running 'alsa-info.sh' is your best bet to get all relevant information. It would be nice to see that. Also, I'm not really familiar with pulseaudio, but isn't pavucontrol where you would see its settings, select a device, etc?

I decided to do a fresh install (it was long time in the coming and I need sound for job related training relatively soon) and I don't have pulse installed anymore.

Strangely enough, I get the same output from those commands right off the bat. Below is the information you requested. Thanks for your time btw.

Re: ALSA/Pulse can only find HDMI, won't find my headphone jacks

Check your dmesg. A good amount of virtual cash on this being a built in Creative onboard soundcard which are a PITA to even attempt to get working.

Thanks!

I checked dmesg and it appears my codec has vanished!

I've temporarily picked up a mediocre USB soundcard which I'd like to return to microcenter but I definitely need to get this working first.

I've been in and out all day so I've been unable to find the codec needed. Curious as to why the codec went away though..

Re: ALSA/Pulse can only find HDMI, won't find my headphone jacks

Missing codecs might be a hardware problem. I have an old Sony VAIO laptop, that sometimes loses its sound codecs, too. There may be a loose/broken cable or cold solder joint somewhere. Closing the lid, turning the laptop around and knocking on it in the area of the headphone jack during standby restores it tongue In case that fails, I also have a usb soundcard.

Re: ALSA/Pulse can only find HDMI, won't find my headphone jacks

Could also be an issue with a modern kernel if this used to work before, what does linux-lts have to say? (If it didn't used to work before, I wouldn't keep my hopes too high, FWIW I also went and bought a seperate PCI soundcard because the creative onboard did start to show some issues on Windows as well and I didn't feel like having to bother with the flaky linux support)
