I like Vmplayer

Anyone here used it ?

How does it stack up against Qemu?

Or does anyone run parallels/Xen ?

Re: I like Vmplayer

I've used vmplayer and it's very impressive.

I think I can say reliably that it will run an OS considerably quicker than Qemu. I know there are ways to accelerate Qemu but it still can't compare unless there have been improvements recently.

I mainly wanted it because there are several audio programs I like to run under XP.

I managed to run FLStudio 5 (formerly fruity loops) virtually flawlessly in WinXP under vmplayer which is pretty amazing.

Support for hardware (like soundcards) is a little shaky which is why it can't completely satisfy my needs.

In general interactions with the XP interface were as fast as normal.

Haven't heard of parallels/Xen, will have to look into that.

Re: I like Vmplayer

vmplayer has several advantages over qemu or parallels:
- DirectX 9 support (not complete yet).
- You can burn via any CD/DVD burner, while this isn't possible in qemu/parallels.
- Full usb device support (currently problematic in qemu/parallels).
- The only point of trouble is the firewire support, which is ATM poor- you can only mount firewire storage media via the host OS, and little more than that- but since the competitiors aren't much better (quite the opposite) there's not much to complain about...

Re: I like Vmplayer

I like vmplayer but setting it up after every kernel upgrade is starting to annoy me

Thought I would give parallels a try but AUR package wil not build (hypervisor!)

No, when Vmplayer works & it does (most of the time!) you can do some cool things...

If I can get it working again! thenI am going to try slackware under it
