there is nothing plugged into any of the usb ports.

is this likely a hardware problem?

I see all these usb peripherals:

Bus 004 Device 003: ID 0bda:0129 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTS5129 Card Reader Controller
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 2232:1029 Silicon Motion WebCam SC-13HDL11939N
Bus 006 Device 004: ID 0cf3:3004 Qualcomm Atheros Communications AR3012 Bluetooth 4.0

That's a card reader, a webcam and a usb bluetooth adapter. They are connected internally to usb ports.

That said, I do see that error sometimes but everything works as expected. If everything works fine for you then just ignore that error.

As an update, I've ran the webcam (with guvcview) mounted an sd card in the card reader, and plugged a wireless mouse into all four of the external usb ports. All is working splendidly. I will open the bottom of the laptop this weekend to clean it, and expose anything perhaps wrong with an unused internal usb port. I may post links to photos in the event that I find anything. I will at that time mark this post "solved."

Thank you

Re: usb error (bluetooth not working, error -110 at boot

Error -110 means insufficient power supply on the usb bus - can be a hardware problem (host or device) but also be "harmless" (temporary issue at init /  device power saving juggles)
The device in question should be your bluetooth, so ensure this works.

yes, it is in fact the the Bluetooth. The device comes on, but will not connect to anything. Is there a module I need to enable or something? I've never had a system with bluetooth before (as ridiculous as that may sound) so I'm a green noob as it relates to this.

Re: usb error (bluetooth not working, error -110 at boot

Check dmesg and your journal for related errors (after/when trying to connect something) and which kernel module is used for the device.
Also see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bluetooth, notably https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bl … uetoothctl and check rfkill.
