[SOLVED] Unable to switch to virtual terminals

Hi! I am unable to switch to a virtual terminal from X; the X display freezes and when I press Ctrl+Alt+F7 (where my X runs) it display is again responsive.

This behavior doesn't seem to be consistent, but when it starts it stays like that until rebooted.

I noticed this first with linux linux-4.12.8-2, but it could very well be present in earlier versions. I am currently using linux 4.12.10-1-ARCH with Intel modesetting driver. This is on a Thinkpad with a Haswell processor and I use it with an external monitor connected through a dock.

Can anyone with a similar setup confirm this? Tips/feedback also appreciated.

Post your Xorg log and journal from a frozen session. Does it happen using native modesetting?

I do not know what native modesetting is. I am not using any userspace Xorg drivers from intel --- I haven't installed xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Here is an excerpt from Xorg.log when the freeze happens. Notice that the freeze occurred when I changed to VT5, and ended when I changed bact to VT7.

The errors are likely not in logind, but dmesg might turn out being interesting.

I solved it by disabling the lightdm display manager. Now I just use startx from VTs of two different users and run Xorg as non-root. This way, I can keep two or more graphical sessions without losing either of them. For some reason, when I startx from a VT while there is a session started by lightdm, the lightdm sessions gets terminated after some time. Marking as solved.
