I'm having an issue where launching a game would crash Steam due to a buffer overflow. I am using the 384.69-2 nvidia proprietary drivers. The games I tested so far is Universe Sandbox 2, American Truck Simulator, CS:GO, Dota 2 which all result in Steam crashing. I have tried with both regular Steam and the beta client along with deleting ~/.steam/. Having Steam in offline mode does prevent the crash but is not ideal for online games.
I don't feel there is something to do with that. Sounds more like a Steam's bug, maybe it is compiled and tested for versions of packages at other distro. You should post this in a Steam forum.
