system hangs with Kernel 4.13

After updating to Kernel 4.13 yesterday I encounter several sporadic system hangs (no mouse, no keyboard reaction - not even magic sysreq keys... - cooler high rotation speed)

my system is an old business class HP Laptop with Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 520  @ 2.40GHz

first I thought it is opera at it was constantly instable, or asd / psd - disabled both
then I loaded a real huge image in Gimp -> hang
then doing some console stuff -> hang

so system load at first seems not to be an issue (also the browsers normally only need high cpu load for some seconds)

I also have a conky session running displaying the CPU cores with its frequencies.

normally 2.4 its the highest GHz number displayed.
With kernel 4.13 values going up to 2.88 - even if it shouldn't be possible with my hardware as far as I know???

I even then installed thermald - but it does not seem to have an effect - the system keeps crashing

Now I have downgraded to 4.12 again

currently the system run for an hour - stable again - just compiling in the background an surfing in parallel - no problems.
conkey doesn't show any frequency above 2.4GHz...

By the way: is there a way to do pacman -Su but excluding new kernels?

Help or Tips are appreciated.

[Edit]: upps there have been some german words in the text...

Re: system hangs with Kernel 4.13

A journal excerpt from a failing boot would be nice, however since it is pretty prevalent currently, I'm going to assume an IOMMU issue: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=230362

As for holding back a package: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pa … g_upgraded be aware, that the kernel is pretty much the only package you can safely ignore, don't make a habit out of it either way.

Re: system hangs with Kernel 4.13

no no, Boot is fine - it never freezes at boot,... the system normaly works from 5 to 30 minutes... then suddenly freezes. after several tries, I can not relate it to any program or load condition.

but after downgrading to 4.12 my uptime is now 1:30... seems stable again

But if it can help I paste a boot with 4.13 from this morning...

Re: system hangs with Kernel 4.13

Please post output in [ code ] tags, makes it much easier to read. That log doesn't mean much, wait till it fails and then post a

journalctl -kb-1

to get the log from the previous boot.

Re: system hangs with Kernel 4.13

My money is on iommu - there's no deterministic error to this problem, ie. it does not *have* to fail at boot time.

Re: system hangs with Kernel 4.13

You don't really recommend to go back from kernel 4.12 to 4.13 and having some more crashes? I am glad ext4 shows no incosistencies so far, but my Opera browser profile is allready destroyed. This is a (at least) 7 year old installation and my main productive system... the last thing I want is to trash the filesystem - yes even if I have an backup of my data and config.

a diff of a 4.12 and 4.13 Log shows no major differencies in the first 3/4.
Never the less then there is a section:

But, never the less what about the CPU frequency thing I wrote about earlier?
I assume something is wrong with the CPU Management in the new kernel.
Maybee it has something to do with this warnings above,...

Re: system hangs with Kernel 4.13

This section doesn't look like it means much either (ACPI errors can happen and if they where present before 4.13 they might not mean much, ACPI errors might be fixable with a BIOS update though). The CPU frequency thing can be normal 2.8 is your turbo boost speed, which can be reached if something uses one core heavily, there's nothing strange about that inherently. Again, post output in [ code ] tags.  And do try the

intel_iommu=off

parameter we mentioned, as said, it doesn't have to fail at boot and might be triggered by certain usage.

Oh and you should also enable and setup microcode updates: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode

Re: system hangs with Kernel 4.13

by the way: the section with the ACPI errors was new with 4.13 . The log of 4.12 does not show these entries.
and until 4.12 the boost frequencies never get visible (at least I dont know if boost was used at all until 4.13) - all tools only show 2.4Ghz

Is there any information what intel_iommu=off is doing?

PS: I will try to remember that code tag... but I am not used to this forum syntax...
