Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

I have a mbp late 2016, I have awesome WM. I can switch between tty only when I'm in console mode. When I start X server I'm no longer able to switch back to console.
The only way to do this is to plug external keyboard.
To summarize I can switch between TTY using macbook keyboard only if I'm in console mode. If I'm in X server I need to plug external one to switch tty.

Any idea?

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

Video card? Driver? Xorg.log? Output of relevant keypresses in X and TTY?

Try the "command" key instead of control.  Macbook keyboards generally have those wired differently if you haven't already done some remapping to account for this.

Edit: or maybe it was that you need to hold command+opt+control then the F-key, there was something odd about their keyboards (it's been many years since I used one).

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

@seth Yes it  does work with sudo.
I believe the problem comes from Xorg. i can switch tty in console mode.
by the way, my mbp has touch bar, and this is the  driver i'm using for the keyboard: https://gist.github.com/roadrunner2/128 … c6a92f9cd7

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

I'd confidently blame that kernel module (since this is an input related issue and the ctrl+alt+F<x> shortcuts are handled by the kernel, not X11)
=> can you try w/o so we can isolate the bug?

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

I just did what u asked! correct me if i'm wrong:

rmmod intel_lpss_pci spi_pxa2xx_platform applespi appletb

results: the keyboard is no longer working.

I had to plug external one and load those modules and reboot.

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

idk whether that keyboard can be driven with the stock kernel modules, but just removing the used one at runtime is no good idea ;-)
Try blacklisting them (at the grub commandline) - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … and_line_2

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

no it can't be driven by the stock kernel modules, you can check here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ma … sion_9.2C1
if it was related to that kernel module, why would i be able to use ctrl+alt+f<x> when i'm in console mode?

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

Wild guess is that the module completely hands the keyboard to the X11 driver - notably for the touchbar.
As a workaround, assign awesome shortcuts to ctrl+alt+f<x> to chvt <x> ?

(You could suid chvt or visudo yourself permissions to invoke it pw-less or use pkexec and a polkit rule for the active user)

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

I just did what you said! i visudo myself .... it works but! all keys combination except ctrl+alt+f<x>!! i could use ctrl+alt+1 it work ctrl+alt+whatever but not f<x>.
i tought it's f<x> problem, so i tried these combinations alt+F<x> or ctl+F<x> and they worked!! what does it mean. so my conclusion is there must be something wrong with ctrl+alt+f<n> while i'm in X11.

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

Actually using awesome to switch tty is really not the solution i'm looking for. sometimes awesome wm could freeze, and with this workaround solution i can do nothing just to force computer to turn off

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

Means the input focus goes nowhere (because of the successful VT switch)
The VT switching is a kernel feature, nothing in X11 should be able to intercept it.

Since you (expectably) do not receive the press event in X11, the problem is not a hand-over, but simply a "nobody cares".
Since the external keyboard works, we can assume it's the touchbar module - you should file a bug upstream.

What you might try in addition is to disable the touchbar in X11 using xinput (but that only works if it's registered as additional keyboard and isn't a practical solution either) and to see whether using evdev instead of libinput (as keayboard driver) makes a difference.

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

the F<n> buttons are displayed on the touchbar. disabling the touchbar means no more F<n> buttons;

actually Xorg can block tty access by adding this to xorg.cong

Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "DontVTSwitch" "True"
EndSection

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

Yes, but didn't put that there and forgot about it, did you? (The X11 server itself can prevent this, but no client should be able to do this - afaik not even runtime configure the server itr.)

The idea is to disable the touchbar in X11 (hoping the kernel will take back full control)

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

first check "xinput" on whether that's a keyboard of its own and then use "xinput disable <id>"

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

i just did that, no succes.

the touchbar is still on, i still can see f<n>.. but it is really disabled, for example if i'm in chrome and press f5 to reload it won't work.

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

That's expectable - the only question is whether ctrl+alt+F<x> switches the VT (but as mentioned, that's hardly a practical "solution" either)

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

maybe this has something to do with this problem

[   394.633] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Fri Sep 29 17:35:47 2017
[ 394.634] (--) controlling tty is VT number 1, auto-enabling KeepTty

this is in my xorg.log

Re: Can't use CTRL ALT F1...6 to switch TTY

here is what i found so far:

$ xmodmap -e "keycode 68 = XF86Switch_VT_2"

after this command, i can swich tp tty2 by pressing f2

but still i want to use ctl+alt combination to do so
