Novell slab menu

hey people,

Novell's new menu layout from SLED is in gnome's CVS, and there is a howto for obtaining it for ubuntu:

Yeecch... That looks like the ugly and largely useless Windows XP menu. I hope it never gets into a stable release of Gnome. :shock:

hmm... interestingly, it looks almost *exactly* like the 'menu' in the windows vista beta I have to test at work (insert frowny face here).

If that kind of thing is the default in future gnomes, with no ability to disable it...I will just have to go with raw openbox, instead of gnome+openbox.

It wouldn't be bad if it's not manditory. You should be able to use the 'classic' menu if you choose. Otherwise, I'm with the cacti and Gullible on this one :!:

I think you guys are missing the point. This stuff is primarily geared towards general desktop users, not linux geeks with esoteric setups. We can stick with our current favorite WMs and DEs. This is primarily to entice general users to start using Linux for their desktop instead of Windows or OSX.

I acually would rather use this than the gnome menu system, anyways. It seems more intuitive. I am going to stick with openbox+gmrun, however, since that is the best setup for me, personally.

I was never fond of the current Gnome menu layout. Some people think it makes a lot of sense, but to me it's just awash in counter-ingenuity. At a minimum it appears that someone tried to make it at least appear usable. But it'll never catch on more broadly as I can already hear the "Novellized" catcalls.

I don't remember how long it took before the spatial nautilus had a patch submitted to put a checkbox in for turning it off.. As I recall, the gnome devs balked on putting that option in for little a while.

At first, it was the default, and required a gconf setting to modify the behavior. Tooling around in gconf reminds me too much of the windows registry...but that is another topic altogether...

I had the same thought when first I fired up gconf. Horrible flashbacks to harder times...

Of course gconf is based on directories and little XML files instead of one big heap... And it doesn't control the whole system... And it's actually comprehensible... I can see where you're coming from though.

darkmatter (on ubuntuforums and #ubuntuforums@freenode) is the one soing most of the porting to ubuntu, he's really knowledgable about the code of it by now.  I'll see if i can get him to start using arch

As for me, i've got aliases set up so any app can be started with a ctrl+alt+space to bring up a custom run dialog, then a 2-3 letter abreviation of the app.

I thought gnome's whole point was simplicity. I can't see this menu ever being a default to the package. But then again... gnome is getting bulkier within the short time I've used linux. Thus, I switched to stricktly openbox

i got it working on arch, but i do not like the fact we would need an patched gnome-desktop & gnome-panel. i will put up a few packages in the aur when i am done tinkering.

The patches are needed for the recently used app menu.
also i would like to wreck out install software and the context menus which contains the uninstall/upgrade thingy...

Perhaps I whould have said that gconf-editor reminds me of regedit and not that gconf was like the registry

speaking of gconf..
an interesting project, called elektra, is another attempt to give linux a single config registry type thingy...

They use a library instead of a daemon, to access the confs, which is very nice... that way, it can be used during boot time (even init).

What is the benefit of having such a centralized config? I suppose it helps keep things clean and simplify development. Still, mixed feelings here....

That sort of thing should IMNSHO not be used for system stuff... Stick with text files for that. For desktop environments, sure, but during boot time? Naah...
