Re: Budgie won't start any more

That's not a valid .xinitrc.

Re: Budgie won't start any more

I copied that .xinitrc straight from the wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Budgie_Desktop
It worked fine this way for a month since the system installation.

Re: Budgie won't start any more

It tells you to modify your xinitrc to include those lines, they shouldn't be the only content.
Read the xinitrc wiki page.

Read the xinitrc wiki page.

My old .xinitrc should be also valid, because I used it for some time without any issues.
Nevertheless I just copied and modified the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc and it didn't solve my problem.

#!/bin/sh

userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap

# merge in defaults and keymaps

if [ -f $sysresources ]; then

    xrdb -merge $sysresources

fi

if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi

if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then

    xrdb -merge "$userresources"

fi

if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
    xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi

# start some nice programs

if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
 for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
  [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
 done
 unset f
fi

The latter does not entail the former.

Please paste the output of `pacman -Qi budgie-desktop`.

Re: Budgie won't start any more

That version was flagged out-of-date in August. I imagine one/some of the gnome updates in your log have broken something...

Re: Budgie won't start any more

Downgrading those gnome packages didn't work either. I'm gonna wait some days for updates. Thanks for your help.

Re: Budgie won't start any more

You could try budgie-desktop-git in the AUR.

Re: Budgie won't start any more

I’m having an almost identical problem on a very similar machine since updating yesterday.

What’s different for me is that previously I had no config at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf which since an update caused X to segfault:

Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

Now that I’ve created that file I’m in the same state as you - budgie doesn’t start.

Re: Budgie won't start any more

intel_iommu=off

If that doesn't work, startx xterm and run budgie-desktop from there, hope for some error messages.
If sth. segfaults, try gdb.
Seems gnome-shell is recently crashing for many people. Since budgie is just a flavored gnome-shell, you might run into that issue.

Otherwise see
