I've been using ms office 2010 for years with arch and no problem, but since the last time I formatted the computer (yesterday), I simply can't get it running.
Installing with wine gives me this error "Microsoft Office Pro 2010 encountered an error during setup".
Any ideas?
ps:
I followed this installation guide: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/wine#Office_2010
Tried playonlinux but it launches a white window and I can't proceed installation (v-4.2.10)
latest wine 2.18

Why not use a open source alternative instead, e.g. LibreOffice?

My spreadsheets only work with excel. libreoffice just doesnt handle it. It freezes and crash.

Why? Too large? Macros? Do you know why it crashes?

no macros, not too large, its 4000 lines database with a lots of "if" functions, grafics and 1mb size... the truth is msoffice is much better, its decades ahead of libreoffice unfortunately...

tried playonlinux with its default wine (1.7.52), moved to stable 2.0.2, then 2.15 and finaly 2.18 and all of them just gives me the same white window wihout buttons and I can't proceed.
Its just me who can't install ms offcie in arch no more?

i have never been able to get it to work either, various things tried with various outcomes. i gave up and run a windows7 VM soley for Outlook which i need for work unfortunatly. (no imap/pop access).
a drop in replacement for outlook with exchange support would be really nice

I managed a workaround to my problem. I installed ubuntu 16.04 on virtualbox, installed playonlinux and then installed msoffice there with no problem. Copied "PlayOnLinux's virtual drives" and ".PlayOnLinux" folders from virtualbox to my arch. Now its working fine.

would it be asking to much to get a copy of those also to try?

i was referring to the configuration only and not the actual office binaries. but note taken and request withdrawn.

What about that online version of Office, is that an option in your case for your spreadsheet?

I faced the same issue, and after hours of searching and nothing helping much, I managed to get it working by myself.
The problem here is with lib32-freetype2 update.
I don't know exactly why, but some applications such as office suite and TeamViewer GUI, only runs on the previous version of freetype2.
You have two options to workaround the problem:
1- To downgrade lib32-freetype2 version to 2-2.8-2. To do that, you need to download the package here: https://archive.archlinux.org/packages/ … pkg.tar.xz
Then, issue pacman -U (package name). This is what worked for me.
2- Extract the package libs inside proper wine lib directory instead of downgrading the global one. In theory this should work, but it didn't for me or I missed something.
About the white screen bug, if you get stuck on a buggy screen during install process (with a wine glass and stuff and no way to close it), you may want to delete all "libz.so*" files under .PlayOnLinux/wine/linux-x86/wine-version/lib/ folder, after doing that, you should no longer get stuck on that buggy screen.
Hope it helps!

Oh, and don't forget to reboot your computer before trying to install office again, because I think the libs are loaded on memory even after you downgrade it.

andersonals, you nailed it! now its working great!
just to add a few things:
you need to downgrade both lib32-freetype2 and freetype2 packages to version 2.8-2 (an easier way to downgrade is by using the package downgrade 6.0 available at AUR)
after the installation is complete, both freetype packages can be updated again and will not break office.
I also tested deleting libz.so* files and the POL white bug screen is gone too.
it did not require me any reboot
thanks!
