External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

As the title suggests. Somehow after updating to gnome 3.26, my external monitor shuts off when my laptop lid is closed. I suspect that my laptop is entering suspend mode even when my monitor is plugged in.

my system:
Lenovo thinkpad x250
Gnome 3.26.1
Session: Wayland

When external monitor is plugged in:
Correct behaviour = do not suspend on lid close
Wrong behaviour = suspend on lid close

I am experiencing the wrong behaviour.

I have already gone into /etc/systemd/logind.conf and uncommented HandleLidSwitchDocked=ignore and it does not seem to do anything.

It seems that the correct behaviour is only happening at the login screen.

Furthermore, I've noticed that the correct behaviour stays, if I don't unplug the monitor vga cable after login. However, if I unplug the monitor and close the lid, the laptop goes back to wrong behaviour when I open the lid and reconnect the vga cable.

I'm currently using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I'm not sure if I can forcefully wake the screen with a wired mouse and keyboard while the laptop lid is closed.

Update: Everything seems to work as it should on Xorg session.
Update: I was wrong. Even Xorg session seems to have this problem. Looks like there is something wrong with gnome itself.

The same here (Dell XPS 13 with a USB-C connected LG 27" monitor using Gnome 3.26.1 on Wayland): it worked with the previous version of gnome under Wayland.

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

Seems to be fixed with the latest mutter update(local/mutter 3.26.1+12+gd6e3193c2-1 (gnome)) for Xorg. I'm using the Budgie desktop and also a Thinkpad X250 and experienced the same issue. After the update the background changes between black and your wallpaper shortly but the external display stays active.

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

So mutter is responsible for multiple monitor support too? That is interesting!

@sitwano: did it fix you problem?

I can't say this: it is still not working in my office-setting; I'll test my home-setting but it should be the same. The laptop goes in standby even with an external monitor connected.

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

Play module parameters related with lid/power if your card have any as a workaround.

sh-4.4$ modinfo -F parm i915 | grep lid
panel_ignore_lid:Override lid status (0=autodetect, 1=autodetect disabled [default], -1=force lid closed, -2=force lid open) (int)
sh-4.4$

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

@unixman: It worked with the same kernel using gnome 3.24. It should be not related to the kernel module. The closure of the lid is correctly detected: the problem is the desktop-environment reaction...

I just suggest as a possible immediate workaround:)

Nope it did not make any difference.

This Ubuntu 17.10 bug report looks related.

Yes it does look somewhat related. The solution mentioned there about toggling the setting in gnome-tweak-tool does not work for me. Besides, I still want my laptop to suspend when the monitor is disconnected.

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

Any news on the topic? I'm experimenting the same issue in two different setups:

  • X11 + Nvidia propietary driver + i3

  • Wayland + Nouveau + gnome

In my case it used to work on both scenarios, but after installing the Nvidia driver it stopped working in the former and after some upgrade it stopped working in the latter.

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

I'm encountering the same issue, Wayland / Mutter / Intel i95, updated as of Tuesday. It was also caused by a recent upgrade (~last month or so, similar to OP)

I'm using the following workaround:

- disable lid suspend in gnome tweak tool
- dock with laptop *open*
- toggle display (meta+p) to "external only"
- close lid

If I plug the laptop in with the lid closed (and sleep disabled), the external monitor seems to wake momentarily then indicate it has no signal.

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

The bug has some patches that are working for me (see https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=788915). You can patch Mutter by yourself or wait they go upstream.
In my past experiences, Nvidia drivers never supported the lid-closed setup: revert on Nouveau drivers.

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

It's not just Wayland: I'm having this issue with Xorg, Gnome 3.26.2 and a Intel HD Graphics 5500.

Re: External monitor shuts off when laptop lid is closed.

I don't know the work around for this. I just want to share my experience with the issue.
XPS 13 9365 2-in-1 here.

Basically, it works as expected if you use a powered up docking station!
I close the lid and the laptop does NOT go to sleep. All is good here

So if I use un-powered dongle like this "DA 200"
http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/prod … u=470-ABNL
than it does not work. The laptop goes to sleep and I pull my hair.

But if I use a powered docking station like this "DW 15"
http://www.dell.com/en-ie/shop/dell-doc … ccessories
than it works as expected. I close the lid and the laptop stays awake.

I hope it helps
