[solved] WIFI slows shutdown with 'wlan failed to remove key ...'

I have Intel WIFI which works out-of-the-box:

03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 (rev 78)
        Subsystem: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275
        Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
        Kernel modules: iwlwifi

The only issue so far is that the device slows shut down because, apparently, a key cannot be removed which systemd thinks should be removed. The following line may not be precisely correct because I have not managed to copy it all before the system forces shut down to continue and the message disappears from the screen. However, I tried to get the key elements down:

... wlan failed to remove key 1. ff:ff:ff:... <more 'ff:'s> from hardware
... wlan failed to remove key 2. ff:ff:ff:... <more 'ff:'s> from hardware
...

The key in both cases is composed solely of fs and colons. It has the format of a MAC address, but something like a blank or empty one. If I run

ip addr

The brd address for both wlan0 and eth0 is similar (ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff). However, I'm not sure that is abnormal as I don't remember precisely what output I've got on other hardware.

2: wlan0X: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP group default qlen 1000
    link/ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    inet XX.X.X.X.XX/XX brd 255.255.255.255 scope global wlan0
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
    inet6 XXXX::XXXX:XXXX:XXXX:XXXX/XX scope link
       valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
3: eth0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state DOWN group default qlen 1000
    link/ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

The 'X's are substituted. The 'f's are in the unobfuscated output.

How can I avoid the glitch when shutting down?

Re: [solved] WIFI slows shutdown with 'wlan failed to remove key ...'

I actually have noticed the same message on my shutdowns (haven't yet spent time looking into exactly why it occurs), but my laptop shuts down just fine with no hang. So similar to what is observed in comment 10 in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1720930 , I think the "failed to remove key" message may, unfortunately, just be a red herring for your hanging shutdown. Have you tried linux-lts (or downgrading packages, though it sounds like this is a new device?) to see if the hang persists?

Yes, it is new, so down-grading would be trickier. I'm not currently inclined to try LTS for this because it is not the biggest headache I have. However, if it continues, I'll see if LTS makes a difference. It certainly stops at this point but, as you say, maybe it is caused by something not outputting anything useful by way of messages.

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/55645 ?
Claimed to be fixed in 4.13.5, though.

That sounds like a rather more extreme problem. My system did shutdown in the end - it just stopped for a long time.

However, I was going to post and say that the issue seems to have resolved. I thought this was related to installing the latest kernel, but I've been pacmanning so much, that I would not want to claim this for sure. (4.13.5 which would fit the report there, if the problems are related.)
