group.lock ???? not able to add new users ?

Hi Guys!

Under trying to add a new user with #adduser
I'm getting a error about not be able to write to /etc/group??? as root

I found a file in /etc called group.lock - what is this ?? the only line it has is :
3412@
also a file called shadow.lock???

Whas is these file good for ???
