Thinkpad Helix: touchpad and trackpoint stop after a while

Hello,

After a major update I've got some problems with my touchpad and my trackpoint. After using it for a while it always stops working with the following error message in the journal:

kernel: rmi4_physical rmi4-00: Failed to read irqs, code=-6

In former times I had similar problems but not as frequent as these. However, I could always solve it by issuing a rmmod psmouse && modprobe psmouse. If I try this now, the following message appears:

modprobe: FATAL: Module psmouse not found in directory /lib/modules/4.13.5-1-ARCH

Can someone tell me what is wrong there? I've checked if psmouse was loaded before I tried to rmmod it, and it was:

$ lsmod | grep psmouse
psmouse               135168  0
libps2                 16384  2 atkbd,psmouse
serio                  20480  8 serio_raw,atkbd,psmouse,rmi_core,i8042

Kind regards and thanks for reading,
Daniel

Please paste the output of `pacman -Q linux && uname -r`.

Ah this could be a problem since I tried to update after the problem occurred and then I tried these rmmod/modprobe things without rebooting:

linux 4.13.7-1
4.13.5-1-ARCH

So I think I should try a reboot then, shouldn't I? This probably solves the rmmod/modprobe issue.

Thank you for your answer. I will try it out.

[Update]
Yes this solves the modprobe issue. However lets also see whether or not the trackpoint/touchpad problem ist gone.

Re: Thinkpad Helix: touchpad and trackpoint stop after a while

I have the Thinkpad Yoga 12, and I have also noticed an increase in frequency in the same issue you reported:

kernel: rmi4_physical rmi4-00: Failed to read irqs, code=-6

For me, the touchpad and trackpad sometimes dies multiple times every minute, so while something like

sudo modprobe -r psmouse && sudo modprobe psmouse

works to restore functionality, I will need to set it up to run every ten seconds or so if the frequency of the error remains this high. I am on 4.13.8-1-ARCH and running Arch via Antergos.

Please update this thread if you encounter a permanent solution, I will do the same.

Re: Thinkpad Helix: touchpad and trackpoint stop after a while

I used my device for a while now and the problem still exists, and the only way to recover the trackpoint/touchpad is to rmmod/modprobe psmouse.

I have same problem on my ThinkPad 11e, adding:

psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=0

as a kernel parameter seems to resolve it.

Thanks. I tried it now for a while and it seems to work. Sorry that it took so long, but I don't have much time with my notebook these days.
