[solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

Hello,

on my computer back home (I'm writing this from work) I recently did a fresh Arch install, and all was fine.
A week or so ago I installed some extra packages (midori and some dependencies), and after a while I realized that running midori would cause GPU glitches, unresponsiveness and sometimes even a system crash (which is something I realized I totally forgot about since switching to Arch 5 years ago). Deinstalling midori and its dependencies took care of that. A few days ago I tried again, could not figure out what caused these glitches, and deinstalled these packages again.

But now X will not start anymore and tells me the NVIDIA driver reported a GPU error.

I am not using GRUB: my BIOS loads EFI and the kernel directly and that has worked fine for a few weeks.
In the console I login and start X manually by typing 'startx'. Normally I am using the i3 window manager, but I think this error happens before we get to that point.

The driver I am using is the one in the standard nvidia package, and I have been using that one for ages on this computer. The card is Geforce GTX 580. lspci correctly reports my graphics card and tells me it is using the NVIDIA driver. I am using the current version, which is 387.12-2.

I have deleted my xorg.conf, tried without it and tried with a new one generated by nvidia-xconfig.
I deleted the file generated by nvidia-settings, reading it could be corrupt and cause problems.
Just in case I have tried without starting i3 in my .xinitrc, but the problem is not there..
My xorg.conf and xorg.conf.d is pretty much empty; very few things relate to the display and the GPU there.

One possibillity could be that my nvidia card died on me, but the fans spin merrily, the card is correctly reported by lspci and I strongly suspect it is a configuration or driver issue.
Are there other things I should look into ? What am I missing ?

SInce it is a rather fresh install I am not sure I can easily downgrade the nvidia driver to the previous version, but that is what I will try tonight.

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

The last 24 hours brought two updates of the Nvidia driver, but they did not solve my problem and I still have GPU crashes.
Downgrading nvidia resulted in errors about the nvidia kernel module not being loaded, also when I downgraded the kernel to an earlier version as well.

Here the Xorg log of the crash with the very latest nvidia driver:

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

There is an existing thread about this problem, please continue there.

Closing, for deletion.

Edit: this thread predates the problem I was referring to. Mod mode Abort.

@OP: are you using testing?

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

@WorMzy, nevertheless he's using 387.22, see the first post logs.

---

If you've nouveau and the ddx nvidia driver at the same time, problems are expectable. And you'll likely do that because of

Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Why does this file exist? What does it contain?
Move it away and see what happens.

Regardless, the latest nvidia blob seems to cause issues, so to be on the safe side, you should also downgrade the nvidia package.

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

Maybe now, but when the topic was created they were using 387.12-2. tongue

Unfortuantely, since OP updated, they've probably got a new problem (as other users running 387.22-1 and 387.22-2 have). These problems are reportedly resolved by 387.22-3, so an upgrade may remedy this new problem.. but there is a -4 package in testing, so there may still be problems with -3.

Using a snapshot from archive.archlinux.org to downgrade the system to the state it was in when 387.12-2 was being used may be a good idea, then we can diagnose the original problem.

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

Hi Seth and Wormzy,

thanks a lot for your replies.

Just now I managed to downgrade to linux kernel 4.13.5-1 and nvidia driver 387.12-1, but I get exactly the same crash as before (as in post #2). So that makes me think that my problem is not related to the current turmoil around the nvidia blob.

As said in my original post, I get the same crash after removing my xorg.conf or after regenerating it with nvidia-xconfig. I don't think I had one originally, but I've been trying pretty much everything I could find in the wiki, sorry for the confusion.
You're right I should probably blacklist nvidia when trying with the nouveau driver; normally I only use nvidia and have nouveau blacklisted.

I am getting a bit stuck here and I do not really know what else to do except doing a more drastic reinstall (again) or try another nvidia card...

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

Please remove (or rename) the xorg.conf for now and try to start X. Assuming it still crashes, post the logfile from that session here.

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

here is the Xorg log of a session with the downgraded kernel and blob, and without xorg.conf.
the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d directory is totally empty, the /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d directory has one small nvidia related file that I posted below. Without that file, Xorg doesn't load the nvidia driver and the server can not start.

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

Without that file, Xorg doesn't load the nvidia driver and the server can not start.

That's fishy - is this a hybrid system at all?
What's the failing xorg log and please provide a complete "dmesg" (and "lspci" for simplicity ;-)

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

hmm, why is that fishy ?
This is not a hybrid system, why would it be ?

The problem is that the GPU crash also corrupts the console, so I can not dump dmesg to a file anymore after it crashed...
I just now posted a log of an Xorg session with the GPU crash ?
Without that small config file I posted, Xorg attempts to load all kinds of modules but doesn't find nvidia. And since nouveau is blacklisted it can't load anything and gives up. No crash there.
As noted in the first post, the GPU correctly shows up in lspci, correct model number and listing nvidia as the driver. No other GPU's present. Is there something specific I should try to dig up there ?

thanks for looking into this !

I will now get you a log of an Xorg session without any nvidia-related config and a dmesg of a login up to starting X..

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

hmm, why is that fishy ?

Because it should just start - this suggest that you need to convince the system into an nvidia GPU that's actually not detected.

This is not a hybrid system, why would it be ?

Why do you have the intel config there? Why do you define nvidia as the primary GPU (if there's only one)

The problem is that the GPU crash also corrupts the console, so I can not dump dmesg to a file anymore after it crashed...

Can you ssh into the system?

and here an Xorg log of an aborting session without any nvidia-related config in either /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d or /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d.
That config file was not put there by me so I have no idea why that intel stuff is there: I only found out today that there are also xorg.conf files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d, never touched that before..
Perhaps that file is part of a residue left there by packages that I have since uninstalled but that did mess up my config somehow.
[EDIT: thanks Progandy, for clearing that up ! This also means the log file below is perhaps not so interesting (it will just show why that file is there smile ); the relevant Xorg log is the one I posted in post #9 and has the GPU crash]

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

Hello,

here I am again, in a more drastic mode.

Today I removed every package I could find that has some link to nvidia or xorg, and my problem persists: the nouveau driver reports a GPU lockup. So now it is obvious that is not related to any conflict between nouveau and nvidia drivers, since I removed everything related to nvidia.

As a last resort before reinstalling Arch I booted from a USB key, and it reports the same problem.
I used this .iso about three weeks ago to install my current system and it definitely did not report this error then.

Below the output of dmesg | grep nouveau after booting from a rather fresh Arch install .iso:

my question is now the following:
given that this happens from an install .iso, is there any chance my problem is not hardware related ?
is there any way to reset/ clear an Nvidia GPU ? I did already remove it from its socket some time last week...

thanks for any insights !

Xid 56 can refer to either a hardware or driver issue, 32 is gonna be a follow up issue.
Since this happened more or less spontanously (I don't buy midori being involved, that's just some client software), I'm afraid "hardware", but you could check another live system (preferably with an older kernel)
A regular "hardware" issue is underpowerage (notably if the GPU has dedicated power supply next to PCIe, ie. a 6/8 pin slot)

Re: [solved] GPU exception with Nvidia driver

currently sailing on with an old ATI card I had lying around, assuming it was hardware problem and marking this as solved.

(I do have a system with an older kernel at work where I will check the card to be really sure).

thanks !
