[Solved] System stuck at boot with gdm and libgdm 3.26.2

Hi all,
Just little more than an hour ago I made an usual

sudo pacman -Syu

After that I rebooted and my system got stuck in the boot process.
I booted with an installation USB drive, mounted my disks and run arch-chroot to read the journal.
This is what I found

$ journalctl -x -b -1 -p 3

I downgraded gdm and libgdm to 3.26.1-1 with pacman -U and I was able to boot again.

I am running GNOME on X with NVIDIA proprietary drivers.

What should I look for to be able to again upgrade those packages?

Thanks

You beat me by 2 minutes! But I guess we're having the same issue.

Are you sure about the version 3.26.1 though? I have this issue with 3.26.2, downgrading to 3.26.1 fixes it.

You are right! My typo!
3.26.2-1 is broken for me.
3.26.1-1 works fine, even after downgrade.

Seems 3.26.2 only works on wayland (at least here with an Intel GPU).

I didn't about the boot flag from journalctl (-b -[n]) prior to reading your post. I tried to running the same thing on my system, but with -p 4 instead, and I got this:

(etc...)

It seems to me gdm is ignoring WaylandEnable=false on /etc/systemctl/custom.conf and trying to run in Wayland mode (which it can't do using nvidia proprietary drivers), but at this point is just a guess.

No, on intel, with `WaylandEnable=false` gdm doesn't run, with it commented out, it runs just fine.

I see, my mistake. Browsing through the commits between 3.26.1 and 3.26.2, I'd hazard a guess the bug is introduced either by this commit or this one, although I can't be sure.

It's happening in Intel IGP as well, managed to get this from journal

Oct 30 19:43:55 Megatherion gdm[953]: Child process -1529 was already dead.

Small hint for those who have a stuck display manager: append "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" to the kernel line in your bootloader, which will bring you to the VT login.

EDIT: slow again, guys beat me to it.

The "unable to kill session works process" message in your log points strongly to this commit then.

Fellas, got the same issue here.. I wonder, how did you guys get to downgrade GDM since for me at least seems it's not available at the repositories right now.. or is there any other way to get rid of this problem?

I used the pacman -U solution mentioned in the wiki.

Re: [Solved] System stuck at boot with gdm and libgdm 3.26.2

Damn guys, you are fast!

Commenting ``WaylandEnable=false`` again seems to indeed solve the problem.
However gdm doesn't seem to remember then that last used option was "Gnome on Xorg".

Because selecting it again every time is annoying downgrade seems like only option ;-).
Fortunately I never clean the cache big_smile.

You could try the archive for gdm and libgdm.

EDIT: don't forget to add gdm and libgdm to IgnorePkg on /etc/pacman.conf afterwards, or you might upgrade them again on your next -Syu.

Affecting me too! While 3.26.1 works perfectly fine, 3.26.2 only works on Xorg (cannot login in wayland at all), yet does not remember that. Intel GPU

You can use the arch linux archive to download, then pacman -U. I do think it's better practice to keep at the very least one older version of each package, unless times are really tough for hard drive space.

This is awesome, the downgrade got my system back up.  But... what do we do now?  Has anyone filed a bug?  Who with?  Is this something Arch patches out, or the gnome people?  Or has someone already done something about this already?

Re: [Solved] System stuck at boot with gdm and libgdm 3.26.2

I too was able to get to desktop after downgrading to previous version. GTX 1080 TI with proprietary driver. I didn't have time to fiddle with configs so I just tried downgrading the GDM package, which I was glad to find working.

Re: [Solved] System stuck at boot with gdm and libgdm 3.26.2

In case this information could help, I had the same issue when upgrading libgdm (3.26.1-1 -> 3.26.2-1)  and gdm (3.26.1-1 -> 3.26.2-1). In my case I'm not using the proprietary Nvidia driver, but the open source nouveau. Using the Xorg or Wayland backed of GDM ended in a frozen system. Downgrading gdm and libgdm did fixed the issue.

I have a lot of ACPI exceptions, but it's kinda normal on my laptop, doesn't has to do with the current issue.

Re: [Solved] System stuck at boot with gdm and libgdm 3.26.2

Another report of this issue... I also had this problem today with gdm 3.26.2-1. On Xorg with a gtx970 + proprietary nvidia drivers. Couldn't boot anymore.

The error I had multiple time in the journal:

Oct 30 23:37:05 charlesg-pc gnome-session-binary[548]: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.Shell.desktop

Moving to lightdm temporarily fixed it for me.

Re: [Solved] System stuck at boot with gdm and libgdm 3.26.2

Me another one with broken gdm today. Just downgrade gdm works too (libgdm can stay 3.26.2). Can somebody post a link to a bug report?

Re: [Solved] System stuck at boot with gdm and libgdm 3.26.2

Thanks for this thread! I was somehow expecting something like that after my system won't boot properly this morning and indeed downgrading from a live image to gdm 3.26.1 helped regain access to my system – thanks!
