vdrift - racing game

It gets better and better:

http://vdrift.net/

Look how many cars and tracks are available. Anyone can try?

2 comments :
- atm it can only be played with a joystick, gamepad or steering wheel. Keyboard is not supported yet.
- vdrift uses a python-based replacement for autotools , Scons
Scons is not yet available for Arch.
Since the vdrift source is accompanied by a local version of Scons that doesn't need to be installeds, that could be used.

As i don't have an analog input device installed, i could not test the game after making the package.

I'll see if i can get my joystick to work this weekend and then check this thread again.

Re: vdrift - racing game

You are wrong two times:

- atm it can only be played with a joystick, gamepad or steering wheel. Keyboard is not supported yet.

I am on laptop now (far away from Poland... in Silicon Valley), and vdrift works with keyboard only.

- vdrift uses a python-based replacement for autotools , Scons Scons is not yet available for Arch.

It is.

Re: vdrift - racing game

about scons in extra : you are right, a package search for cons didn't find it, guess i have to check what kind of expression archlinux package search expects.

the line about the lack of keyboard support came directly from the vdrift faq ...
maybe they haven't updated the faq.

I'll see what i can do tomorrow for a package.

Re: vdrift - racing game

Maybe the very old version of vdrift was working with joystick only, new one for sure works with keyboard and it is also possible to use mouse as analog control.

Re: vdrift - racing game

Ok, it does work with keyboard.
However when it's compiled with gcc 4.1 the view keeps shifting around and the game is unplayable.

The binary package doesn't have this problem, and there are some notes in the docs that suggest this problem can be solved by compiling with gcc 3.x.

It looks like an arch package will have to wait until the author makes a working gcc 4 version.

It's a pity, it does indeed look like a good game.

Re: vdrift - racing game

But PKGBUILD may use binary version, just like with many other games. I know that it's not a perfect solution, but at least package would be available!

Re: vdrift - racing game

That is  a possibility, but the binary is made to be installed with autopackage.
A forum search found a script at http://gc-group.dk/auto2pkg.sh.gz that can convert an autopackage to a archlinux package.
I'll check it out later this week

Re: vdrift - racing game

I have been busy lately and haven't had much time for this.

I found out how to extract the files from the autopackage installer, but haven't tested if just moving the files to the pkg folder is enough.
I dislike this method, as it seems a very dirty way to solve things and will not pursue it further.

Using the gcc34 package in AUR would be a lot neater, although it means users who want to install vdrift need to install an additional aur package.

As i don't know when i have time to look into this again, i hope someone else will give it a try.

Re: vdrift - racing game

Well,  i've found some time to spend on this.

On the vdrift forum it is mentioned that they have found the reason why compiling with gcc4 gave the bouncing effect, and the patch is already in their SVN version and will bepart of next release.

I've installed gcc 3.3.6 from community and started a pkgbuild (see below).

it doesn't build correctly atm, but fails with this error at the first scons line :
scons: Building targets ...
g++-3.3 -o build/vamos/body/Aerodynamic_Device.o -c -Wall -Wno-non-virtual-dtor -g3 -DENABLE_NLS -DPACKAGE="VDrift" -DLOCALEDIR="/usr/share/locale" -DDEBUG=1 -DENABLE_BINRELOC -DVERSION="2006-08-26" -Iinclude src/vamos/body/Aerodynamic_Device.cc
sh: g++-3.3: command not found
scons: *** [build/vamos/body/Aerodynamic_Device.o] Error 127
scons: building terminated because of errors.
==> ERROR: Build Failed.  Aborting...

Re: vdrift - racing game

@Lone_Wolf: instead of use_gcc_33=1 try using export CC=gcc3 and export CXX=g+3. If that doesn't work, look at the Makefiles that scons uses/creates to correct the name of the compiler binary.

Also depends=('gcc3' ...) is enough, no need to specify a version.

Re: vdrift - racing game

Could you not just make a PKGBUILD to fetch and build the latest SVN version if the gcc4 issue is fixed in SVN? Dibble has a nice guide in the wiki about making SVN/CVS packages.

OK, in that case I will download SVN snapshot and try to compile it at home. If I'll succeed I will create a PKGBUILD in AUR.

Re: vdrift - racing game

I've had more time than expected and found making a svn-pkg not to hard (see below).

The menu entry in KDE works, but the icon isn't shown.

I've tested 1 car and 3 tracks, and it looks like everything is working.

1 thing : you must remove any previous installs of vdrift AND the .vdrift folder in your home directory before installing or vdrift will be confused about the data paths.

The creators have a lot to do still (f.e. career game) but it's definitely a game worth playing,

Jacek, i suggest you test it, and if everything works for you also it can be put in the aur.

Re: vdrift - racing game

Last weekend a frien dof mine tested the above pkgbuild and it looks like everything works.

While checking the vdrift website i found a post on sep 30 from the developer, stating that there will be a new stable release based on the svn version within a short time.

I'll wait for this release and then use that to make  a package for aur.

Re: vdrift - racing game

I'm glad that someone is interested and that someone more experienced in Arch packaging will do the package for me. I used to be a Slackware Vdrift packager back in the days when I was still using the distro. The current SVN version worked for me too with a minor issue.

2 tips:

1) If scons fails outputting this error

scons: *** Target `/usr/share/games/vdrift/bin' of Install() is a file, but should be a directory. Perhaps you have the Install() arguments backwards?
File "src/SConscript", line 88, in ?

Then you have to create the '/usr/share/games/vdrift'  directory yourself

2) Here's the IRC log concerning scons 'release' variable:
Venzon is the lead Vdrift developper

<EnjoMitch> what was the option to turn on optimizations ?
<EnjoMitch> release=1 ?
<EnjoMitch> 'scons release=1' to turn off compiler optimizations and debugging info.
<EnjoMitch> I don't get it smile If I wanted to make a release then I should disable optimisations ?
<Venzon> yep
<Venzon> well, i guess that doesn't exactly make sense
<EnjoMitch> correct :]
<Venzon> but with optimizations on the code generated is usually specific to the architecture
<EnjoMitch> ah ok
<Venzon> so if you're doing a binary release, you want debugging info off, compiler optimizations off
<EnjoMitch> hmm
<EnjoMitch> Arch is specific in this way
<EnjoMitch> everything should be made under i686
<EnjoMitch> so release=0 ?

He didn't actually answer me for the last question so either the answer is obvious or he simply went away. I'll ask again before the release.

Thanks for that tip, EnjoMitch.
I do get a very similar error, but since everything worked i decided it was safe to ignore it.
I will make sure the dir will be there before scons is run when i make the release package

2. i included os_cxxflags=1 on the scons line to make sure it uses the normal archlinux complier flags (686 , O2 iirc) . Can you check with venzon if that also makes an optimised binary as i suspect ?

Thelusiv replied

here's the IRC log:

EnjoMitch> is there no way of combining arch=p4 with arch=axp ? smile
<thelusiv> well, they do two different things...
<thelusiv> -march=athlon-xp and -march=pentium4
<EnjoMitch> yeah ...
<thelusiv> i guess it could be done, i'm not sure what the compiler would think about that
<thelusiv> do you know anything about how the arch packages are usually built? what kind of compiler flags do other c++ programs use?
<EnjoMitch> no but I can ask
<EnjoMitch> anything else ?
<thelusiv> when you do release=1 it turns on -O compiler flag too
<thelusiv> i can't think of anything else

exactly -O2 flag. Check lines 211-213 of SConstruct

As for trying to answer  your 2nd question:

<thelusiv> i mean what is the exact compiler flag that gets turned on by arch?
<thelusiv> surely "686" is not a compiler flag
<thelusiv> what does it use if you do just scons release=1 os_cxxflags=1 ?
